In a recent advisory, Singapore officials have instructed event organisers at Hong Lim Park’s Speakers’ Corner to refrain from any expressions or discussions surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict. This notice precedes an anticipated gathering, with authorities underscoring the importance of adhering to established regulations.
The Singapore Police Force and the National Parks Board jointly issued this caution. They explicitly stated that the event should not feature any flags, symbols, or coordinated actions associated with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Authorities highlighted that the gathering must stay within its designated framework and avoid bringing up sensitive geopolitical topics. Any effort to introduce discussions related to the Israel-Hamas situation will be deemed a breach of the event’s conditions.
NParks, overseeing Speakers’ Corner, reiterated that discussions should not involve issues concerning race or religion. Furthermore, the site’s regulations prohibit foreign participation.
Speakers’ Corner at Hong Lim Park offers Singaporeans a platform for public assemblies without needing a police permit, as long as they comply with stringent legal guidelines. Continuous monitoring is in place to ensure adherence to these rules.
The police confirmed that event organisers are aware of the compliance requirements attached to their event approval. However, officials warned that any infringement, including prohibited symbols or themes, may lead to enforceable actions.
The authorities also mentioned that rigorous monitoring will be implemented, and any non-compliance could result in investigations, underscoring Singapore’s decisive approach to upholding public order and social stability.
