Calgary Winter Weather: The Dangers of Hazard Lights

Calgary faced a severe winter storm this week, with extreme winds and snow contributing to perilous driving conditions across the city. Motorists encountered significantly reduced visibility and slippery roads, leading to increased safety concerns and renewed guidance from both police and driving experts.

While snowfall wasn't exceptionally heavy, the fierce winds—gusting up to 80 km/h—worsened the situation. In certain areas, visibility dropped to mere feet, complicating the ability of drivers to see other vehicles, lane markers, or potential dangers. Consequently, city streets and highways became hazardous in a brief span of time.

A pivotal issue raised during the storm was the tendency of drivers to activate their hazard lights in low-visibility conditions. Experts emphasize that while drivers think hazard lights improve visibility, this practice can lead to confusion. Hazard lights are meant to indicate a stopped or impaired vehicle, or to alert others of a potential hazard ahead—not for usage during regular driving in adverse weather.

With many vehicles displaying hazard lights, it becomes challenging for other motorists to assess speed, distance, and movement. Moreover, since hazard lights deactivate turn signals, communicating lane changes or turns becomes nearly impossible, heightening the chances of collisions in already tense situations.

Police and driving instructors are urging motorists to prioritize safer options. Recommendations include slowing down, maintaining a larger following distance, using conventional headlights and taillights instead of daytime running lights, and ensuring cars are properly maintained for winter conditions. The use of winter tires is especially emphasized for improved traction and control on snow-covered roads.

Experts further suggest that avoiding travel during severe weather is often the safest decision. If conditions suddenly deteriorate, drivers should find a safe spot to pull over and wait out the storm, as winter weather can shift rapidly.

With traffic fatalities already a pressing concern this year, officials remind Calgarians that winter driving demands patience, planning, and caution. Adopting safer driving practices and avoiding unnecessary journeys can help reduce accidents and keep roads safer during unpredictable winter storms.
