In a serious incident early Monday morning, two individuals were hospitalized in Calgary, with one in critical condition, following a crash attributed to harsh winter conditions. The weather has once again raised alarm over travel safety as icy roads pose significant risks for drivers.
The collision took place around 6:40 a.m. on Crowchild Trail N.W., close to University Drive. A vehicle reportedly plunged nearly 25 feet from an overpass, landing upside down after colliding with another car and breaking through a traffic barrier on the northbound lanes.
Police revealed that the accident involved a white Toyota Corolla, driven by a man in his thirties, crashing into the rear of a Toyota Yaris operated by a woman in her forties. The female passenger in the Corolla sustained critical injuries, while the driver faced serious injuries. Fortunately, the driver of the Yaris emerged unscathed. Investigators noted no signs of impairment from alcohol or drugs, yet are assessing how speed and icy conditions might have contributed to the crash.
At the time of the incident, authorities warned that the roads were extraordinarily perilous. An officer present at the scene mentioned the ice that coated the road, making driving particularly treacherous. Alerts from Environment Canada indicated the possibility of freezing drizzle and fog, which could create nearly invisible layers of ice for motorists.
The crash was part of a larger pattern, with police noting multiple other accidents throughout the city that morning. In one notable event, six vehicles, including two school buses, were involved in a collision that required three children to be hospitalized, thankfully with non-life-threatening injuries.
Calgary city officials are urging drivers to exercise extra caution, despite the arrival of spring. A city representative pointed out that winter-like conditions can persist into April, particularly with freezing drizzle making roads dangerously slippery.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing, and authorities remind drivers to slow down, keep a safe distance, and adjust their driving behavior according to the weather.
