Filipino girl group BINI has taken their fight against online abuse to the courts after a video that was maliciously edited caused the group to face widespread criticism and online harassment. The eight-member P-pop group, known for their upbeat personalities and performances, claimed that the video deliberately misrepresented them, leading to severe mental and emotional distress.
On Monday, the members of BINI, along with their lawyer Joji Alonso, went to the Hall of Justice in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, to formally file a complaint against an unnamed individual who uploaded the spliced video. The complaint cites “unjust vexation” under Article 287 and Section 4(b) of RA 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

What Sparked the Complaint
The controversy centers around a video featuring BINI tasting classic Filipino street food. The original video was about 25 minutes long, showing the members enjoying the food, laughing, and giving honest reactions. However, the video that was uploaded online had been cut down to just two minutes, leaving out most of the lighthearted moments.
According to their lawyer, Joji Alonso, the edited video changed the story completely, making it appear as if the group were dismissive and rude toward the food. This false portrayal led to a flood of negative comments and online bashing directed at the group. Alonso explained, “The edited video painted the girls in a negative light and caused extreme mental and emotional anguish.”
Online Backlash and Emotional Impact
The backlash against BINI was fast and intense. Members received hate comments, name-calling, and harsh insults on various social media platforms. Alonso emphasized that the online abuse went beyond normal criticism. “All eight of them suffered because of this. This is not simple criticism,” she said. The case is being treated as a cybercrime case because the actions fall under unjust vexation, which is a serious offense.
This situation highlights how online content can harm reputations and affect mental health. Alonso added, “Freedom to post online is not an absolute right. The right to free speech ends when it starts to harm or malign the reputation of others.”
BINI Members Take Legal Oath
The eight members of BINI—Jhoanna, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, and Sheena—went through a formal process at the court. They took their oaths before the prosecutors and submitted sworn statements detailing the emotional impact the incident had on them.
The court documents show that BINI is also seeking damages of ₱1 million per member, which totals ₱8 million for the group. If the court finds the uploader guilty, the penalties are serious, with six to twelve years in prison possible for the offense.
Legal Grounds: Unjust Vexation and Cybercrime
The complaint filed by BINI cites unjust vexation, which under Philippine law refers to acts that cause distress, anxiety, or suffering to another person without a justifiable reason. Section 4(b) of the Cybercrime Prevention Act specifically addresses online acts that inflict psychological or emotional harm.
Alonso explained that the edited video fits this description perfectly, as it misrepresented the group’s behavior and caused public ridicule. The case also sets a precedent on how cybercrime laws apply to manipulated online content that targets individuals or groups.
The Role of Social Media and Online Responsibility
This case brings attention to the responsibility of social media users. While people enjoy the freedom to post content, spreading false or edited material can have serious consequences. Alonso emphasized that the right to free speech does not allow individuals to harm others online, and BINI’s case is a clear example of why cyber laws exist.
The incident also sheds light on the pressures faced by young celebrities. Public figures, especially members of popular groups like BINI, are constantly under scrutiny. Even harmless actions can be misinterpreted if presented in a misleading way. The court case hopes to send a strong message that online abuse and malicious editing will not be tolerated.
Background on BINI
BINI is an eight-member Filipino girl group that has gained attention for its catchy music and engaging performances. The members—Jhoanna, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, and Sheena—have been praised for their talents and charm, making them popular among fans not only in the Philippines but also internationally.
The group has previously made headlines for their first world tour stop outside the Philippines in Dubai, where they received praise for their performance and connection with fans. This international exposure has increased their popularity but has also made them targets for online scrutiny.
The Importance of the Case
This legal action is significant because it addresses how online content can impact mental health and reputations. By taking the case to court, BINI is standing up for their rights and sending a message that cyber harassment will not go unpunished.
The case also serves as a reminder that viral content can have unintended consequences, especially when edited to misrepresent someone’s actions. Alonso highlighted that the group’s image and emotional wellbeing were severely affected by the manipulated video, and this case seeks both justice and compensation.
What Comes Next
The court will now investigate the complaint, identify the uploader, and determine the extent of responsibility. Legal experts note that the outcome could influence future cybercrime cases involving celebrities and online content, particularly those involving misrepresentation and malicious editing.
Meanwhile, BINI continues to focus on their music and engagements, but this case shows how serious online abuse can be, and how legal systems can provide protection against such actions.
The case filed by BINI is an important reminder of the impact of cybercrime and online harassment. Edited videos, false content, and malicious posts can go beyond mere criticism and become a serious offense under the law. With legal action underway, the group hopes to not only protect their own reputation but also raise awareness about responsible online behavior.
BINI’s fight for justice highlights the importance of mental health, emotional wellbeing, and legal rights in the digital age, proving that the online world comes with responsibilities and consequences.
