The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing for a very important Annual General Meeting (AGM) that will take place in Mumbai on September 28, 2025. This meeting will not be a routine one because some of the top posts of Indian cricket’s governing body will change hands, including the roles of the President of BCCI and the Chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Why a New President is Needed
The post of BCCI President has become vacant after Roger Binny, a former Indian cricketer, stepped down earlier this month. Binny had been appointed to the top role in October 2022 and completed almost three years in office. But as per the BCCI’s own constitution, no official can continue in any post beyond the age of 70 years. Binny turned 70 in July 2025, which automatically ended his term. Even though he was expected to remain in charge until the AGM, his formal exit now makes the September 28 meeting crucial for electing a successor.
IPL Chairman’s Position Also Open
Along with the President’s post, the seat of the IPL Chairman will also see a change. Arun Dhumal, who has served in various capacities within the cricket board, is unlikely to continue in the role after completing a cumulative term of six years. With the IPL being India’s biggest sporting brand and a multi-billion-dollar cricket league, the appointment of its new chairman will be closely watched not just by cricket lovers but also by sponsors, broadcasters, and players worldwide.
Other Key Roles and Officials
While the elections will technically be open for all major roles, in reality, only the positions of President and IPL Chairman are in question. Other officials are set to continue their duties.
* Devajit Saikia, who became Secretary in January 2025 after Jay Shah moved on to the International Cricket Council (ICC) as Chairman, will continue in his role.
* Rohan Gauns Desai, elected as Joint Secretary in March 2025, is also expected to remain.
* Prabhtej Bhatia, who took charge as Treasurer earlier this year, will continue too.
This means the focus of the AGM will largely be on finding the right leadership for the President and IPL Chairman’s roles.

What Else Will Be Decided at the AGM
Apart from electing these top two posts, the AGM will also cover several important decisions:
* Election and induction of one representative from the general body into the apex council.
* Induction of two representatives from the Indian Cricketers’ Association.
* Appointment of a new BCCI Ombudsman and Ethics Officer.
* Selection of BCCI’s official representative at the ICC.
All of these steps are important because the AGM not only decides leadership but also sets the future course for Indian cricket’s governance.
Why This AGM Matters
This year’s AGM has extra weight because it is happening at a time when Indian cricket is at the peak of global influence. The IPL continues to dominate the sporting and business side of cricket, while the Indian team plays a central role in international tournaments. With Binny stepping aside and Dhumal reaching his term limit, the board is expected to bring in new faces who will lead cricket’s biggest governing body into its next phase.
Observers believe the next President and IPL Chairman will not only manage domestic cricket but also carry heavy responsibilities on the world stage. The leadership will decide how India continues to shape cricket at the ICC level, how the IPL expands its global footprint, and how domestic cricket structures keep growing alongside the glamour of the league.
Looking Ahead
For fans, players, and cricket insiders, September 28, 2025, will be an important date. While the game on the field excites millions, decisions taken in the BCCI’s AGM decide the direction in which Indian cricket will move for years to come. Whether it is policy-making, international relations, player welfare, or commercial growth, the people elected this month will hold the keys.
