The Asia Cup cricket tournament 2025 begins on Tuesday in Dubai, but cricket fans, organisers, and sponsors are eagerly waiting for Sunday. That is when India and Pakistan, the region’s biggest rivals, will face each other. This match is always considered the highlight of any tournament, and this year, the stakes are even higher due to recent political tensions between the two countries.
Historical Context of India-Pakistan Cricket Rivalry
India and Pakistan share a long and complicated history. Pakistan was created in 1947 when India was divided during the end of British colonial rule. This division led to violence and long-standing hostility between the two countries. Over the years, India and Pakistan have fought four wars and numerous border skirmishes, mainly over the disputed Kashmir region.

Cricket matches between India and Pakistan have always carried additional significance because they are more than just a game. They represent a shared history, national pride, and sometimes, a way to momentarily set aside political differences.
Despite these tensions, the two countries have faced each other in major cricket tournaments such as the International Cricket Council (ICC) events and the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) Asia Cup. However, bilateral series between the two nations have been rare. In fact, it has been nearly 18 years since India and Pakistan played a Test match, the five-day version of cricket considered the pinnacle of the sport. It has also been almost 13 years since the two countries crossed borders for a bilateral series.
Asia Cup and Political Influence
The Asia Cup has not been immune to political tensions. In the 1990-91 tournament, Pakistan withdrew when India hosted the event due to unrest in Indian-administered Kashmir. The 1993 edition was cancelled entirely amid growing political strains. Over the years, political issues have often overshadowed sporting ambitions.
However, during major tournaments like the Asia Cup, the same differences that cause political conflicts are often set aside to allow matches to take place. Between September 14 and 21, 2025, Pakistan and India could meet up to three times in the tournament if results go as planned. This would be a rare and exciting occurrence for fans across the world.
The Commercial Side of India-Pakistan Matches
Cricket administrators admit that the India-Pakistan rivalry is also a major driver of revenue and viewership. Sami Ul Hasan, former head of ICC media and communications, explained, “It’s all about maximising eyeballs and tournament revenue. When the ICC plans a global event, organisers focus on ensuring India and Pakistan play at least once.”
This focus has led to changes in tournament formats to make sure the two teams meet. For example, ICC has admitted to adjusting tournament draws in the past to place India and Pakistan in the same group. The results speak for themselves. The India-Pakistan fixture at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 generated over 26 billion minutes of television watch time, surpassing the 19.5 billion minutes recorded in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
Broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals for these matches are among the most lucrative in cricket. Tournament organisers like ICC and ACC sell these rights to the highest bidders, and the revenue is shared among member nations. As Hasan noted, “Even in smaller tournaments like the Asia Cup, the first question from broadcasters and sponsors is always about India vs Pakistan matches.”
Fans’ Perspective
While India-Pakistan matches dominate attention, fans of other countries often focus on their own teams. Mohammad Akram, a Sri Lankan fan, said, “I only care about Sri Lanka. We don’t mind if all the attention is on India and Pakistan, as long as our team performs well.”
Sri Lanka has been a strong performer in the Asia Cup, reaching 13 finals and winning the trophy six times, second only to India. They have consistently been overshadowed by the India-Pakistan rivalry, yet their fans remain focused on their own team’s performance.
Rule Adjustments and Controversies
The heavy focus on India-Pakistan games has sometimes led to controversial decisions. In the last Asia Cup held in Sri Lanka, rain forced the abandonment of a group-stage India-Pakistan match. To ensure the teams could still play in later stages, organisers allocated a reserve day for their Super Four match, bypassing other teams. This decision raised eyebrows and criticism from cricket experts who argued that tournament rules should apply equally to all teams.
As Hasan said, “Rules must not be bent for anyone. Changing them for a single fixture sends the wrong message about money and commercialisation being more important than the sport.”
India’s Sports Policy and International Ambitions
India’s approach to bilateral sports with Pakistan has also been affected by politics. In August 2025, India announced a new sports policy. Under this policy, Indian teams and athletes cannot participate in bilateral events with Pakistan but are allowed to face them in international tournaments like the Asia Cup.
Indian athletes are also barred from travelling to Pakistan, and Indian organisers will not host Pakistani teams. According to Hasan, this policy ensures India’s global sporting ambitions, such as bidding for the 2036 Olympics and the 2030 Commonwealth Games, are not affected. He added, “For India to refuse to play Pakistan outright would weaken its image as a potential global sporting hub.”
This Asia Cup will not only be about cricket but also about navigating politics, revenue, and fan expectations. The upcoming India vs Pakistan match in Dubai will be watched by millions, and if both teams meet multiple times, it could set new viewership records.
The tournament also reminds fans that cricket, despite political challenges, remains a unifying force in South Asia. It is a moment when nations that have been at odds for decades come together on a cricket field, offering fans thrilling entertainment, national pride, and unforgettable memories.
