Apple has just shown off a brand new look for its software, and it’s called Liquid Glass. This design will appear across all Apple devices, including iPhones (iOS 26), iPads (iPadOS 26), Macs (macOS Tahoe 26), Apple Watches (watchOS 26), and Apple TVs (tvOS 261). The main goal is to make everything look and feel more lively and exciting, while still keeping the familiar Apple style that people love.

What is Liquid Glass?

Liquid Glass is a special new material in the software that looks a lot like real glass. It’s see-through and can change its look based on what’s around it. For example, it can reflect colors from the background and even adapt to light or dark settings. When you move your device or scroll, Liquid Glass shines and changes, making everything feel more alive.

How Does It Change the Apps?

Apple has redesigned many parts of its apps and system screens. Buttons, switches, sliders, and even the bars you use to move around apps are all made with Liquid Glass. These controls now float above your content, and they change shape or size when you need more options. For example, in iOS 26, the tab bar at the bottom of the screen shrinks when you scroll down to help you focus on what you’re reading, and it grows back when you scroll up.

Sidebars in iPad and Mac apps now look even cooler, showing off the content behind them and matching the colors of your wallpaper. Apps like Camera, Photos, Safari, FaceTime, Apple Music, and Podcasts all have this new design, making them more fun and easier to use.

System Changes Across Devices

This new design isn’t just for apps. It’s everywhere in Apple’s software. The Lock Screen, Home Screen, desktop, and Dock all use Liquid Glass. For example, the time on the Lock Screen is now made out of Liquid Glass and fits nicely behind the main subject in your photo wallpaper.

On the Home Screen and Mac desktop, app icons and widgets are layered with Liquid Glass, giving them a shiny, bright look. You can even personalize your Mac’s desktop and Dock with different tints and a clear, see-through menu bar that makes your screen look bigger.

For App Developers

Apple has also made it easier for app makers to use this new design. With updated tools, developers can add Liquid Glass to their own apps, making every tap and swipe look and feel better for users.

Why Did Apple Do This?

Alan Dye, who leads Apple’s design team, said that Apple always wants to make using technology feel simple, beautiful, and fun. This is the biggest design update Apple has ever done, and it was carefully made by rethinking every part of their software. The new Liquid Glass design is meant to make even the smallest actions, like tapping a button, feel magical.
