Dubai: Tonight, Apple is unveiling its much-anticipated iPhone 17 lineup, and millions around the world are eagerly watching. But for Indians living in the UAE, this launch is extra special. For the first time in Apple’s history, the entire iPhone 17 series, including the premium Pro models, is being assembled in India.
This move marks a major milestone not only for Apple but also for India, putting the country firmly on the global tech map.

India’s New Role in iPhone Production
Apple has chosen five factories in India for iPhone production. Two of these factories are brand new and have recently started operations. These facilities are now central to Apple’s long-term strategy to expand manufacturing outside of China.
The key factories include:
Tata Group’s plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu
Foxconn’s expanded facility near Bengaluru Airport
Sources indicate that the Tata Group could soon be responsible for nearly half of India’s iPhone production, which would make it a major player in Apple’s global supply chain.
Apple’s main goal behind this shift is clear: reduce dependency on China, avoid unpredictable U.S. tariffs, and secure a more resilient global supply chain.
India Powers iPhones for the U.S. Market
This is not just about local pride—it’s about global reach. According to Canalys, 78% of all iPhones exported from India by June 2025 were bound for the U.S., up from 53% just a year ago. Between April and July 2025 alone, India shipped $7.5 billion worth of iPhones. This is nearly half of India’s total iPhone exports from the previous fiscal year, which stood at $17 billion.
Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed in a recent earnings call that the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. will soon be made in India. One of the main reasons for this is tariff pressure from the U.S.
The Impact of U.S. Tariffs
Former U.S. President Donald Trump had repeatedly criticized Apple for relying heavily on Chinese factories. He even suggested higher tariffs on Chinese imports. While iPhones have mostly avoided these tariffs so far, Apple estimates that tariffs will cost around $1.1 billion this year, with $900 million potentially affecting the company’s fourth-quarter profits.
This makes India not just a secondary location but a core zone for Apple’s global production strategy.
Apple’s Global Manufacturing Strategy
Apple’s production strategy now clearly separates regions based on products:
Vietnam: iPads, Macs, AirPods, and Apple Watches
India: iPhones, mainly for the U.S. market
China: Focus on non-U.S. demand
As Cook explained, having all production in one country posed too much risk. By diversifying, Apple can continue production smoothly even if problems arise in one location.
Challenges in India: Engineer Recall
Transitioning production to India hasn’t been completely smooth. Foxconn, Apple’s partner, had to recall about 300 Chinese engineers from its Indian unit, Yuzhan Technology. These engineers mainly worked on enclosures and display modules, not the iPhone 17, but their departure highlighted China’s concern over Apple’s India pivot.
To keep production on track, Foxconn deployed Taiwanese engineers and adjusted machinery for English-speaking teams. This ensured that iPhone 17 production continued with minimal disruption.
Production Targets and Expansion
Despite these challenges, Apple is moving full speed ahead. Internal projections cited by Bloomberg show that Apple plans to produce 60 million iPhones in India in 2025, up from 35–40 million in the current fiscal year. The Tata Group plays a central role in this growth, making India a key player in global iPhone production.
What This Means for Indians in the UAE
For Indian expats in the UAE, the iPhone 17 launch has a personal connection. Many of the phones sold in Dubai and Abu Dhabi next week could be the first Made-in-India iPhone 17 units.
This is not just about technology or Apple’s brand—it represents India’s rising place in global tech. Indians can now hold in their hands a device that is made in their homeland, combining prestige, innovation, and national pride.
Whether it’s the base iPhone 17 or the high-end Pro Max, these devices carry a piece of India to the global market. For Indian expats, it’s a unique moment that celebrates both innovation and identity.
A Made-in-India Moment
The iPhone 17 launch is about much more than specifications, cameras, or AI features. It symbolizes a significant shift in how global tech products are manufactured and where India stands in that ecosystem.
Apple’s move highlights the growing importance of India not just as a consumer market but as a key player in global production. For millions of Indians abroad, this is a moment of pride—a quiet yet powerful Made-in-India milestone.
The iPhone 17 launch tonight is historic for multiple reasons. It demonstrates Apple’s confidence in India’s manufacturing capabilities and highlights the country’s growing role in the global technology supply chain. For Indian expats, especially those in the UAE, this launch is personal—a chance to celebrate India’s progress while enjoying one of the world’s most advanced smartphones.
From tariff pressures to production shifts and new factories, the story of the iPhone 17 is also the story of India rising as a global tech powerhouse. Tonight, as the world watches Apple unveil its latest devices, Indians everywhere can take pride in knowing that their country played a central role in making them.
