Actor Anupama Parameswaran has opened up about a distressing episode of online harassment, revealing that she has been the target of false and inappropriate content circulated by a 20-year-old girl. The Karthikeya 2 actor took to Instagram to share the ordeal, announcing that she has filed a formal cyber complaint and will pursue strict legal action against the perpetrator.

In a heartfelt note shared on Instagram, Anupama detailed the extent of the cyberbullying she endured.

An Instagram account was circulating extremely inappropriate and false content about me, my family, and even tagging my friends and co-actors. The posts included morphed pictures and baseless allegations – it was deeply distressing to see such targeted harassment online,” she wrote.

The actor further revealed that the same person had created multiple fake accounts to spread malicious content and hateful comments under posts related to her. This continuous online abuse prompted her to take the matter to the Cyber Crime Police in Kerala.

Investigation leads to a 20-year-old from Tamil Nadu.

According to Anupama, the cyber investigation traced the origin of the fake accounts to a 20-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu. While the actor confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, she clarified that she would not reveal the individual’s identity due to her age.

Anupama stated that the issue is not limited to personal defamation but reflects a larger problem of irresponsible behavior on social media. She used her platform to caution people about the serious consequences of such actions.

“Owning a smartphone or having access to social media platforms does not give anyone the right to harass, defame, or spread hatred against others. Every action online leaves a trace, and accountability will follow,” she wrote.

Actor warns of strict legal consequences.

Anupama emphasized that being a public figure does not make one immune to harassment or defamation. She asserted that cyberbullying is a punishable offence and that people must be aware of the legal implications of their online behavior.

“Being an actor or public figure does not strip away basic rights. Cyberbullying is a punishable offence – and accountability is real,” she concluded in her post.

Her statement has since drawn widespread attention from fans and fellow industry members, many of whom have lauded her for taking a stand against digital harassment and encouraging responsible online conduct.

A growing concern in the entertainment industry

Incidents of online abuse against celebrities have become increasingly common in recent years. Many actors, including well-known names from South Indian cinema, have spoken up about cyberbullying, trolling, and defamation campaigns targeting them.

Experts note that while social media allows for greater connection between stars and their audiences, it has also enabled anonymity-fueled harassment, which can have severe emotional and mental health impacts on public figures.

Anupama’s upcoming projects

Despite the unfortunate incident, Anupama continues to focus on her flourishing film career. In 2025, she appeared in multiple films across languages — Dragon and Bison Kaalamaadan in Tamil, Paradha and Kishkindhapuri in Telugu, and JSK: Janaki V v/s State of Kerala and The Pet Detective in Malayalam.

The actor will soon be seen in her upcoming Tamil project titled Lockdown, further cementing her reputation as one of the most versatile and promising talents in South Indian cinema.

Anupama Parameswaran’s stand against cyberbullying serves as an important reminder that online abuse carries real-world consequences. By pursuing legal action, the actor hopes to set a precedent that cyber safety and accountability must be taken seriously, regardless of one’s social status or public profile.
