Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown is returning to Miami to face an attempted murder charge linked to a shooting incident that took place in May. The 36-year-old athlete, who spent 12 seasons in the National Football League, was transferred from New Jersey to Florida on Tuesday after waiving his extradition rights. His lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, confirmed that a written not guilty plea has already been filed on Brown’s behalf. Brown could appear in a Miami courtroom as early as Wednesday morning for a bail hearing.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on May 16 following a celebrity boxing event in Florida. Investigators allege that Antonio Brown grabbed a handgun from a member of the event’s security team and fired two shots at a man identified as Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu. The victim told police that one of the bullets grazed his neck during the altercation. The two men had reportedly been involved in a physical fight earlier in the evening before the shooting occurred.

Initially, Brown was not arrested because police had not yet identified Nantambu as the victim. However, on May 21, Nantambu provided a full statement to investigators, identifying Brown as the shooter. This led to an arrest warrant being issued. Brown was later detained in Dubai, where he had been residing for several months, before being extradited to the United States and transported to New Jersey. On Tuesday, Essex County Jail records confirmed that Brown was released for transfer to Florida.

Brown’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, insists that his client acted purely in self-defense. In a statement released to the media, Eiglarsh said, “Antonio Brown was attacked that night and acted within his legal right to protect himself.” He added that the actions were a direct response to what he described as “the alleged victim’s violent behavior.” Brown himself posted on social media after the incident, claiming he was “jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm.”

In Florida, second-degree attempted murder is a serious offense that carries a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years and a fine of as much as $10,000 if convicted. Legal experts note that the outcome of the case may depend heavily on whether the court accepts Brown’s claim of self-defense and whether video footage or eyewitness testimony supports his version of events.

Before his arrest, Antonio Brown had been living in Dubai, often sharing updates on social media about his new lifestyle and business ventures. He was reportedly detained by local authorities following the U.S. warrant and then extradited to New Jersey, where he awaited the transfer to Miami. His social media activity suggested he was trying to rebuild his life overseas after leaving professional football behind.

Antonio Brown was one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL during his career. He played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over 12 seasons, Brown recorded 928 receptions, more than 12,000 receiving yards, and 88 total touchdowns. He was selected to seven Pro Bowls and was widely recognized for his speed, agility, and precise route running. However, his career was also marked by off-field controversies and legal troubles.

Brown’s career effectively ended in 2021 after a bizarre incident during a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game against the New York Jets. During the match, Brown removed his jersey and equipment mid-game, ran off the field, and waved to the crowd. The incident led to his immediate release from the team. Since then, Brown has faced numerous legal challenges, including charges related to domestic violence, unpaid child support, and battery.

The attempted murder case is the latest in a series of legal issues that have followed Brown since his NFL career began to decline. He has previously faced accusations of assaulting a moving-truck driver, property damage, and other violent incidents. Despite multiple controversies, Brown has maintained a loyal fan base and often expressed his desire to return to professional sports or entertainment.

As of now, Antonio Brown remains under legal custody pending his bail hearing in Miami. His legal team is expected to argue that the incident was an act of self-defense. The case will likely attract significant media attention due to Brown’s high profile and past controversies. If convicted, Brown could face a lengthy prison sentence, effectively ending any hopes of a return to professional sports or public life.
