A sophisticated artificial water channel system dating back nearly 4,000 years has been discovered in central China’s Henan Province, offering fresh insights into the urban planning and governance of the ancient Xia Dynasty (2070 BC–1600 BC).
The discovery was made at the Wangchenggang archaeological site in Dengfeng and was officially announced during a forum highlighting the province’s latest archaeological findings, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Archaeologists have identified two large artificial ditches from the early Xia period, each measuring approximately three metres in width and extending over 120 metres in length. These north-south aligned ditches were connected to a wider moat, around 10 metres across, forming a well-integrated system for water supply, drainage and spatial organisation.
Ma Long, the lead archaeologist on the excavation, stated that both ditches share a consistent design, reflecting a high level of engineering precision and planning. He noted that the construction would have required the removal of thousands of cubic metres of earth, indicating the presence of organised labour and strong administrative control.
In addition to the main ditches, researchers uncovered several smaller channels ranging from 0.3 to one metre in width. These channels were linked to buildings and kilns, allowing efficient drainage of rainwater and wastewater, and helping maintain dry living conditions.
Experts believe that the scale and structured layout of this water management system highlight the advanced organisational capacity and standardised engineering practices of the Xia Dynasty. Yang Wensheng, Vice Director of the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, described the findings as crucial evidence of early state formation and societal development in ancient China.
