During a panel discussion on the second day of the Arab Media Forum, experts delved into the complex dynamics surrounding the Palestinian issue and its implications for regional stability. The discussion, titled ‘The Middle East: A Vision for Stability’, featured insights from Mina Al-Oraibi, Editor-in-Chief of The National, and Dr. Afshin Molavi, a researcher specializing in Foreign Policy & Advanced International Studies at Washington. Moderated by Dan Murphy of CNBC International, the discussion shed light on the challenges facing the region and potential paths toward resolution.
Al-Oraibi lamented the lack of a viable long-term plan for Gaza following the outbreak of conflict in October the previous year. She emphasized the detrimental impact of the UN veto against a Palestinian state on regional peace efforts. Molavi highlighted the stark divide between forward-thinking actors and those entrenched in the past, citing figures like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian group Hamas.

The conversation expanded to encompass broader regional issues, including Yemen's conflict with the Houthis, Lebanon's internal challenges, and ongoing crises in Syria and Iran. Molavi underscored the region's immense potential, with a population of over 500 million, yet noted widespread economic underperformance hindering prosperity, particularly for the youth demographic.
Al-Oraibi stressed the importance of individual contributions to fostering stability and prosperity in the region, while Molavi referenced the Arab Youth Survey, which revealed both discontent and hope among the younger generation.
The discussion turned to the realities of reporting from conflict zones like Gaza, with Al-Oraibi commending journalists for their courageous efforts despite significant challenges. Molavi highlighted the subjective nature of media coverage and the influence of algorithms on news dissemination.
Addressing disparities in media coverage between Israelis and Palestinians, Al-Oraibi criticized Israeli media for perceived bias, while Molavi acknowledged the role of algorithms in shaping news consumption patterns and urged consumers to seek diverse perspectives.
Overall, the panel discussion provided a comprehensive examination of the Palestinian issue and its broader implications for regional stability, underscoring the need for nuanced understanding and proactive engagement to address complex challenges.
