Amazon has set forth one of its boldest initiatives yet, announcing an investment exceeding $35 billion in India by 2030. This revelation was made at the Amazon Smbhav Summit held in New Delhi, focusing on digital growth, export empowerment, logistics enhancement, and workforce development.

This new financial commitment follows nearly $40 billion already channeled into India since 2010, during which time Amazon has expanded significantly across e-commerce, cloud computing, logistics, and digital finance.

According to the corporation, this investment will prioritize three key areas — digitisation, export enhancement, and job creation. Amazon plans to bolster its fulfilment centres, data centres, and tech infrastructure in India, aiming to equip small enterprises, manufacturers, and service providers with modern digital tools.

The digitisation initiative is set to assist millions of small businesses in optimizing operations, improving inventory management, and enhancing customer shopping experiences. Additionally, Amazon aims to extend these digital capabilities to 15 million small enterprises across India by 2030.

A significant aspect of Amazon’s strategy is to elevate India’s role in global e-commerce. The company aims to boost cumulative exports facilitated through its platforms to $80 billion by 2030, up from approximately $20 billion currently. This includes aiding Indian manufacturers and artisans in connecting with international consumers via Amazon’s Global Selling programme.

Job creation remains a fundamental element of Amazon’s plan. A recent report from Keystone Strategy presented at the summit highlighted that Amazon has supported around 2.8 million jobs in India, both direct and indirect, across various sectors like logistics and tech. With expanded investment, this figure is expected to rise to 3.8 million by 2030.

Education initiatives are also pivotal to the company’s roadmap. Amazon plans to offer AI-related learning opportunities to nearly four million students through partnerships with government and educational institutions, fostering skills aligned with India’s National Education Policy 2020.

This announcement places Amazon alongside leading tech corporations making substantial investments in India. Recently, Microsoft announced expansion plans, while Google committed $15 billion in collaboration with Airtel to establish a large-scale data centre in Visakhapatnam.

Amazon’s latest pledge emphasizes India’s rising significance as a tech hub and global export powerhouse, aligning with the company’s long-term vision for the nation’s digital and economic advancement.
