Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced a groundbreaking partnership with ADNEC Group aimed at transforming the ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi into the first and largest event venue in the Middle East powered entirely by renewable and clean energy. This landmark agreement, signed at the ADNEC Centre, is expected to set new standards for sustainability in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions (MICE) sector across the UAE.
The partnership was formalized by Othman Al Ali, the Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, and Humaid Matar Al Dhaheri, the Managing Director and Group CEO of ADNEC Group. Their signing was witnessed by key representatives from both organizations, highlighting the collaborative effort to promote sustainability in the region.
As a prominent events space, the ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi hosts a wide array of international exhibitions and events throughout the year, attracting exhibitors, visitors, and business professionals from around the globe. Under this new agreement, 100% of the venue's grid power will be supplied by EWEC's renewable and clean energy sources. This commitment will be substantiated by the issuance of Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) from the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), ensuring the transparency and accountability of the energy supplied.
The strategic partnership is poised to make a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions associated with major exhibitions and events held at the ADNEC Centre. By adopting these clean energy practices, the ADNEC Group aims to position itself as a global leader in sustainable event management.

Othman Al Ali expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to partner with ADNEC Group to decarbonise ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi’s grid power consumption. EWEC is committed to increasing renewable and clean energy adoption in the UAE, facilitating organizations in their efforts to reduce Scope 2 emissions and transition towards more sustainable operations. This partnership sets a benchmark for decarbonising major international events in Abu Dhabi and aligns with the UAE's net-zero targets.”
Humaid Matar Al Dhaheri echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the strategic importance of the partnership. He remarked, “ADNEC Group’s collaboration with EWEC underscores our commitment to sustainability through the adoption of renewable and clean energy. This initiative not only aligns with the UAE’s sustainable development goals but also establishes a new benchmark for decarbonisation within the UAE's business tourism sector. We are proud to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s reputation as the capital of sustainable events and exhibitions in the region.”
To support this transition, EWEC is driving the implementation of the Clean Energy Certificates scheme established by the DoE. These certificates, issued in units of one megawatt-hour, are tradable digital assets that comply with the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard). They represent ownership of the environmental and economic benefits associated with clean energy consumption, playing a crucial role in promoting sustainability.
EWEC acts as the Single Registrant and Auction Operator for the CEC scheme, which is integral to the UAE’s shift toward a low-carbon economy. This initiative is part of the broader strategy to achieve the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 goal, showcasing the nation’s commitment to a sustainable future. The partnership between EWEC and ADNEC Group is a significant step in this direction, demonstrating how collaboration can lead to impactful changes in the energy landscape and beyond.
