Abu Dhabi has taken a bold leap in urban mobility by officially recognising modular smart vehicles as a new category of road transport. Announced during DRIFTx 2025 at the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, this global first marks a transformative moment in city transport policy and innovation.
Developed by NExT, these vehicles are reconfigurable, allowing units to connect or separate depending on passenger numbers or operational requirements. This flexibility not only optimises traffic flow but also significantly reduces congestion and lowers carbon emissions, creating a more sustainable urban transport environment.
Backed by rigorous research from leading institutions in New York and Abu Dhabi, and validated through international awards and real-world trials, these vehicles showcase the potential to revolutionise city mobility. Unlike conventional vehicles, modular smart vehicles can adapt in real-time to demand, making them a versatile solution for both everyday commutes and specialized transport needs.
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), in partnership with Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub, is now conducting the world’s first pilot operation of these vehicles on Yas Island. This pilot aims to demonstrate the practical advantages of modular connectivity while preparing the ground for broader integration of smart and autonomous driving systems in Abu Dhabi.
Beyond immediate efficiency gains, these vehicles provide a platform for developing remote-control and autonomous driving capabilities, reflecting the city’s long-term vision of a fully integrated intelligent transport network. By adopting this approach, Abu Dhabi continues to solidify its status as a global leader in sustainable and innovative mobility solutions.
With this recognition, modular smart vehicles are no longer a futuristic concept—they are set to reshape urban transportation, offering cities worldwide a blueprint for smarter, greener, and more adaptable mobility systems.
