Abu Dhabi and Japan are taking flight together to protect raptors and preserve cultural heritage. Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the INPEX JODCO Foundation have formalised a new partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The initiative builds on a successful pilot project in Japan between 2024 and 2025 and aims to expand conservation efforts for falcons and other raptor species in both countries. The agreement focuses on joint scientific research, habitat protection, and community awareness campaigns, strengthening environmental ties between the UAE and Japan.

Expanding Research and Conservation Efforts

The partnership will see innovative measures such as installing artificial nests equipped with monitoring cameras in Japan to study breeding behaviour, population trends, and habitat use. In the UAE, the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital will play a central role in rehabilitating peregrine and other raptor species. The collaboration also includes specialised training for Japanese zoo staff, promoting knowledge exchange and best practices in raptor care.

Connecting Culture and Conservation

Beyond science, the MoU celebrates cultural heritage. Falcons are emblematic of Emirati identity and resilience, recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Similarly, Japan’s long-standing cultural reverence for nature forms an important pillar of the partnership. Educational programs, exhibitions, and community initiatives will highlight the shared values of both nations, aiming to inspire future generations about the importance of biodiversity.

Proven Track Record in Falcon Protection

The initiative builds on the UAE’s Sheikh Zayed Falcon Release Programme, which has successfully returned 2,355 falcons to the wild since its launch. The programme is considered a global benchmark for restoring endangered species and reflects Abu Dhabi’s leadership in environmental sustainability. By combining scientific expertise with cultural heritage, the UAE and Japan aim to strengthen falcon populations and protect raptors from threats including habitat loss, unsustainable breeding, and climate change.

This partnership marks a new chapter in international wildlife conservation, uniting tradition, innovation, and cross-cultural collaboration to safeguard some of the world’s most remarkable birds of prey.
