Sharjah Backs Beirut Grand Theatre Revival in UNESCO Pact

Paris – In a landmark move to preserve cultural heritage, the Government of Sharjah signed an agreement with UNESCO on Tuesday to support the rehabilitation of Beirut’s iconic Grand Theatre. The ceremony took place at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, underscoring Sharjah’s growing role in promoting arts and culture across the Arab world.

The agreement was witnessed by top officials, including Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Culture; Ernesto Ottone Ramirez, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture; Hind Darwish, Lebanon’s Ambassador to UNESCO; and George Kreidi, Director of the UNESCO Office in Beirut. Arab intellectuals and diplomatic representatives also attended.

Abdullah Al Owais highlighted the importance of cultural cooperation and its long-lasting impact on societies. He noted that this initiative continues the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who has long supported cultural and educational institutions globally.

The Beirut Grand Theatre, originally designed by Youssef Aftimos and built by Jacques Tabet in the 1920s, opened its doors in 1929 and quickly became a hub for international theatrical performances. Over the decades, it has remained a symbol of Lebanon’s rich artistic heritage.

The funding from Sharjah will contribute to restoring the theatre’s historic structure, aligning with UNESCO’s international campaign to safeguard cultural landmarks worldwide. The Lebanese ambassador praised the emirate’s initiative, noting that it will strengthen the country’s artistic scene and support creative talents.

The rehabilitation project not only aims to preserve the theatre’s architecture but also to revive Beirut’s cultural vibrancy, reaffirming Sharjah’s commitment to nurturing the arts as a key pillar of civilization.
