The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), in partnership with the Drone Champions League (DCL), held the first-ever A2RL x DCL Autonomous Drone Championship at Marina Hall, ADNEC Centre in Abu Dhabi. This event was the first of its kind in the Middle East, showcasing exciting new drone technology.

A big moment in the championship was when MAVLab, a team from the Netherlands, won the AI vs Human challenge. Their AI-powered drone beat a top human pilot in a race. This race was one of the most complicated drone races ever held and involved the best drone pilots from the DCL Falcon Cup.
The competition lasted for two days, with 14 teams from different countries, including the UAE, Netherlands, Austria, South Korea, Czech Republic, Mexico, Turkey, China, Spain, Canada, and the USA. The teams came from universities, research labs, and new tech companies.
Each team raced with a standard drone. These drones had special computers and cameras that helped them make decisions without human help. The drones raced fast—over 150 km/h—and had to go through a tough course filled with many challenges. The course had wide gates, strange lighting, and few markers, which made it hard for the drones to navigate. It was the first time a race like this, with such a simple-looking course, was held.
One of the highlights was when MAVLab (TU Delft) won the AI Grand Challenge. They completed two laps of the 170-meter course in just 17 seconds. MAVLab also won the AI vs Human race, where their drone raced faster than a human pilot.
TII Racing also won in the multi-drone race, where several drones raced together, showing how well they could avoid crashing and work together. MAVLab (TU Delft) also won the world's first AI-only drag race, where the drone showed how fast it could go in a straight line.
His Excellency Faisal Al Bannai, a leader at the ATRC, said, "At ATRC, we believe that new ideas need to be tested in the real world, not just promised. A2RL is more than a race. It is a place to test new ideas in high-speed tech, showing the UAE’s commitment to supporting AI, robots, and new transportation ideas."
Stephane Timpano, the CEO of ASPIRE, the company that runs the A2RL, said, "The future of flying isn’t just in labs. It’s happening on the racetrack. What we saw this weekend shows how close we are to using autonomous systems in daily life."
Markus Stampfer, leader of the DCL, said, "We brought the best racing conditions to drones, and the AI technology was up to the challenge. This is a big step forward for both racing and technology."
Christophe De Wagter, leader of MAVLab, said, "Winning the AI Grand Challenge and AI vs Human race is a huge achievement for our team. It shows that years of hard work in drone technology have paid off. To see our technology win in such a difficult race feels amazing."
The A2RL x DCL Drone STEM Program, in partnership with UNICEF and supervised by ATRC, has helped train over 100 Emirati students this year. More than 60% of them received a special certification, and 24 earned perfect scores, showing how advanced drone and aviation skills are being taught.
With the drone championship done, all eyes are now on the next A2RL event—the autonomous car racing series, which will happen in late 2025 at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. This next event promises even more exciting developments in autonomous technology and racing.
