As the year ends, many children begin to feel stressed about their school exams. Long study hours, difficult subjects, and the fear of not meeting parents’ or teachers’ expectations can make the exam season very tough. Children often move from happy festival days to very busy routines with homework, late tuitions, and hardly any time to relax. All this can put a lot of pressure on young minds, making them feel anxious or scared about exams.
Mental health experts say that stress during exam time is normal, but parents can play an important role in reducing this pressure. When parents guide children with calm and kindness, instead of blaming or shouting, it helps children study better and feel more confident.
Prakriti Poddar, global head of mental health and wellbeing at the Roundglass Living app, explained that exams should not be seen as something to fear. She said that exams are not only tests of knowledge but also a chance for children to build strength, learn discipline, and understand their own abilities. She believes that if families change their mindset about exams, children will feel less scared and more supported.
Experts say that parents can help children in simple ways. One important step is to listen. When children share that they are stressed or tired, parents should hear them with patience instead of pushing them harder. Even a small talk can make a child feel safe and understood. Another helpful step is to make a balanced study plan. Children should have time to rest, eat, and play, along with their study time. When the routine is balanced, their mind stays fresh.
Parents can also help by avoiding comparisons. When children are compared to siblings or classmates, it increases stress and lowers confidence. Instead, parents should encourage children to do their personal best and celebrate small improvements.
Healthy habits also matter during exam season. Good sleep, regular meals, and short breaks during study hours help the brain work better. Children who rest well remember things more easily and handle worries more calmly. Parents can remind children to take small walks, stretch, or drink water to stay relaxed.
Emotional support from parents is one of the strongest tools. A few positive words, a hug, or a simple “I believe in you” can reduce anxiety. Children feel safe when they know their parents care about their effort, not just their marks. This positive environment helps them focus more on learning than on fear.
Experts also advise parents to keep home conversations peaceful during exam weeks. Loud arguments or constant pressure can disturb a child's mind. A quiet and friendly home helps children concentrate and feel confident about their exams.
Prakriti Poddar said that exam season does not have to be stressful for families. If parents support their children with love, patience, and healthy routines, exam days can become easier and less frightening. She believes that with the right guidance, exams can help children grow, learn new skills, and understand their true potential.
As the exam season arrives, parents and children can work together to make this time smoother. With calm support and simple steps, the heavy stress on children can reduce, allowing them to study with clarity, peace, and confidence.
