Gastroenterologist Shares 3 Everyday Habits That Silently Damage Liver Health

Liver problems are rising fast across the world, and doctors say our daily habits are a major reason. A recent study in the Journal of Hepatology found that liver diseases now cause nearly two million deaths every year. This means one out of every 25 deaths worldwide happens because the liver stops working properly. The numbers continue to grow as more people follow a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy routines.

Because the liver is one of the most important organs in the body, experts are asking people to take better care of it. Florida-based gastroenterologist Dr Joseph Salhab shared three common habits that may quietly harm the liver without showing early signs. He urged people to be more aware so they can protect their health.

1. Long-Term Daily Alcohol Use

According to Dr Salhab, drinking alcohol every day is one of the biggest threats to the liver. While many people think only heavy drinking is harmful, long-term daily drinking can also slowly damage liver cells. Over time, this may lead to serious problems such as fatty liver, inflammation, and even liver failure. The doctor warned that the duration of drinking matters just as much as the amount.

He explained that alcohol is processed by the liver, and too much of it puts extreme pressure on the organ. When the liver is overworked every day, it becomes weak and cannot repair itself properly.

2. Poor Lifestyle and Lack of Movement

Modern life has become less active. Many people sit for long hours, work on screens, avoid exercise, and follow irregular routines. This slow lifestyle adds fat to the liver and increases the risk of fatty liver disease. When the liver collects too much fat, it struggles to function well.

Experts say at least 30 minutes of daily movement can make a big difference. Simple activities like walking, stretching, or light workouts can help protect the liver and improve digestion, metabolism, and overall energy.

3. Unhealthy Eating Patterns

What you eat every day also affects your liver. Diets high in sugar, processed foods, oily meals, and fast food can cause fat buildup in the liver. Eating late at night or overeating regularly can also harm its function.

Doctors recommend a simple, clean diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, lean protein, and plenty of water. These foods help the liver filter toxins and repair itself.

Why Early Care Matters

The liver does not show early symptoms when it is getting damaged. Many people realise they have a liver issue only when the condition becomes serious. That is why daily good habits are important. Taking action early can prevent long-term harm.

Dr Salhab says people should make small but steady changes. Limit alcohol, stay active, eat clean, and watch for signs like tiredness, bloating, or discomfort. If any unusual symptoms appear, it is best to consult a doctor quickly.
