Our body often gives us signals when it is not getting enough nutrition. But many people ignore these signs because they look small or normal. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, shared a simple explanation on Instagram about five signs that show the body needs more nutrients.
The first sign he talked about is brittle nails. When nails break easily or look weak, it may mean the body is low in protein and iron. Protein helps in repairing tissues, and iron helps carry oxygen in the blood. If these nutrients are low for a long time, the nails become weak.
The second sign is twitching in the eyelids or limbs. This sudden and repeated muscle movement may be linked to low magnesium levels. Magnesium is important for the nerves and muscles to work properly. When the body does not have enough magnesium, the nerves can become more sensitive and cause twitching.
The third sign is clicking sounds in the joints. Many people think joint sounds are normal, but they can also show a deficiency of vitamin D3 or calcium. These nutrients help keep the bones strong. When they are low, the joints may feel weak, and small sounds may occur when moving.
The fourth sign Dr. Sethi mentioned is premature greying of hair. Many people believe hair turning grey early is only genetic, but it can also be caused by low vitamin B12 or copper. Vitamin B12 is important for healthy blood cells and oxygen supply to the hair roots. Copper helps in making melanin, the natural pigment that gives hair its colour. When these nutrients are low, hair may start turning grey earlier than expected.
The fifth sign is easy bruising. If someone gets bruises even with light pressure or small bumps, it may mean the body is low in vitamin C or vitamin K1. Vitamin C helps in forming collagen, which keeps the skin and tissues strong. Vitamin K1 helps the blood to clot. Without enough of these vitamins, the skin becomes weaker, and bruises appear easily.
These signs may look simple, but they should not be ignored. They can be early warnings that the body needs more balanced meals with protein, minerals, and vitamins. Foods like green vegetables, nuts, fruits, dairy, eggs, and whole grains can help improve nutrition levels naturally.
However, it is important to remember that this information is for awareness only. Anyone who notices these signs should speak to a doctor or nutrition specialist for proper medical advice. Self-diagnosis or taking supplements without guidance can be harmful.
