A mild earthquake was recorded in the Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh early Tuesday morning. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the region experienced a 3.6-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale at 2:07 am IST.
The NCS reported that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with coordinates 28.85°N latitude and 95.24°E longitude. The agency confirmed the details in a post on X, stating that the tremor was centred in the Upper Siang area.
Local authorities have not reported any damage or injuries so far, and officials are monitoring the situation to assess the impact of the seismic activity. Mild earthquakes are common in the northeastern region, which falls under a high-seismic zone.
Experts note that shallow earthquakes tend to produce stronger ground shaking than deeper quakes. Because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to reach the surface, even moderate tremors at shallow depths can cause more noticeable shaking and may pose a higher risk to structures, depending on the population density and infrastructure conditions.
The earthquake adds to ongoing concerns about seismic activity in Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring northeastern states, where monitoring agencies consistently record minor to moderate tremors. Authorities have advised residents to remain aware of safety guidelines related to earthquake-prone areas.
