The University of Tennessee basketball team continued its strong start to the season with a confident 91-66 win over Rice in a nonconference game played in Knoxville. The victory helped Tennessee maintain an unbeaten 4-0 record and extend its impressive run of home success. This match also highlighted the depth and balance of the Tennessee squad, which displayed strong teamwork, skilled offense and solid defense throughout the game. Rice, now 2-3, tried to stay competitive but struggled to keep up with Tennessee’s speed, scoring ability and rebounding strength.
One of the biggest stories of the night was the performance of Felix Okpara. He finished with a career-high 20 points, shooting an outstanding 8-of-10 from the field. He also added eight rebounds, making him one of the most impactful players on the court. His combination of scoring, rebounding and aggressive play under the basket made a major difference for the Volunteers. Okpara’s energy helped Tennessee gain control early and keep the lead throughout the game.
While Okpara stood out, he was not the only key performer for Tennessee. Nate Ament had an excellent all-around game with 19 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. His ability to contribute in many areas helped Tennessee maintain pressure on both ends of the court.
Ja’Kobi Gillespie also played a major role, scoring 17 points and providing eight assists. His passing helped set up easy baskets for his teammates, and his leadership ensured that Tennessee’s offense flowed smoothly. Ethan Burg added 11 points, giving Tennessee another reliable scoring option.
For Rice, Nick Anderson led the team with 19 points and three steals. Cam Carroll added 14 points, and Jalen Smith scored 10. However, Rice struggled with shooting efficiency throughout the game. The team made only 33.3 percent of its shots and missed many opportunities from three-point range, hitting only eight of 28 attempts.
One of the toughest nights belonged to Trae Broadnax, who missed all 16 of his field goal attempts. While he still managed five points from free throws, the poor shooting made it hard for Rice to stay close.
Despite the big win, Tennessee had one worrying moment when J.P. Estrella went down with a left-leg injury late in the first half. He landed awkwardly during a rebound attempt and immediately grabbed his knee. Estrella had played only limited games last season due to a foot surgery, so this new injury raised concern for the team. Before exiting, he had scored four points in nine minutes.
Tennessee shot 52.3 percent from the field and controlled the rebounds with a 47-31 advantage, showing their strong physical presence. The Volunteers led 39-26 at halftime and held double-digit leads for much of the second half. Rice tried to close the gap with quick scoring bursts, but Tennessee always answered. Big plays by Ament, Okpara and Gillespie helped Tennessee stay safely ahead.
In the closing minutes, Tennessee continued to increase its lead, reaching a game-high margin of 26 points. With strong offense, intense defense and balanced contributions from multiple players, the Volunteers secured a comfortable home victory. The win further strengthens Tennessee’s confidence as they continue their season and aim to build on their impressive home winning streak.
