On Monday morning, a low-magnitude earthquake of 2.8 hit Delhi, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred around 8:44 am, with its epicenter in North Delhi, located just 5 kilometers deep.
The NCS provided the following details: "Earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred on 19/01/2026 at 08:44:16 IST, latitude 28.86 N, longitude 77.06 E, depth 5 km, location North Delhi."
Such seismic incidents are not uncommon in Delhi, which is in Zone IV, a prime seismic area in India known for its risk. Despite the potential dangers, there have been no quakes surpassing magnitude 5 in the last ten years.
Earlier this month, another minor quake measuring 3.5 jolted the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand at around 7:25 am, prompting locals to evacuate. Thankfully, officials confirmed that no one was injured, and no major damage occurred.
Recently, the Delhi-NCR region has experienced several moderate quakes, including a 4.1-magnitude event in Haryana last year. These shallow tremors have generally caused minimal harm.
Residents are encouraged to stay alert and prepared, bearing in mind the region's earthquake vulnerability. Authorities are actively monitoring the seismic activity for public safety.
