A federal judge has once again dismissed Mark Zuckerberg as an individual defendant in a series of lawsuits accusing Meta Platforms Inc. and other social media companies of contributing to the addiction of children to their platforms. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who is presiding over the cases, ruled Thursday that the revised complaints were not legally sufficient to proceed against Zuckerberg personally.
This ruling removes Zuckerberg from the group of individual defendants but does not impact the ongoing claims against Meta as a company. The lawsuits, filed on behalf of minors, accuse Meta’s Instagram and Facebook platforms of being unsafe for children. The plaintiffs argue that Zuckerberg was repeatedly warned by Meta employees about the risks these platforms posed to young users, including potential addictive behaviors, but chose to ignore these warnings and fail to make them public.

The legal tradition in corporate law makes it challenging to hold CEOs personally accountable for the actions of their companies. This principle shields executives from personal liability in most cases. Judge Rogers acknowledged that while further investigation might uncover more direct involvement by Zuckerberg in Meta’s alleged misconduct, the current allegations were not strong enough to meet the legal standard for corporate officer liability.
The cases against Zuckerberg are part of a larger collection of lawsuits, with over 1,000 filed in both state and federal courts in California. These suits have been brought by families and public school districts against Meta, as well as Alphabet Inc.’s Google, ByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok, and Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat. Some claims have been allowed to proceed in court, while others have been dismissed, as courts continue to assess the legal grounds for each case.
