In a deeply personal and emotional conversation, senior Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal has finally spoken out about the end of his marriage with Dhanashree Verma. The two had tied the knot in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown, and while their relationship appeared strong on social media, the reality behind the scenes was far more complex. In May 2025, their five-year marriage came to an end, and Chahal has now opened up for the first time about what truly went wrong, how he struggled mentally, and how public perception affected his personal life.
Marriage and The Beginning of Distance
Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma were once seen as a happy couple. Their wedding photos had flooded social media, and fans admired their cheerful and supportive bond. But like many relationships that look perfect from the outside, theirs also began facing challenges.
Chahal revealed that after about three years of marriage, differences began to emerge. He shared that both he and Dhanashree were extremely focused on their individual careers. Chahal was busy travelling and playing international cricket, while Dhanashree was building her identity as a dancer, choreographer, and social media influencer.

He said, "A relationship is like a compromise. If one person is angry, the other has to listen and balance it out. But sometimes, two people are just not compatible by nature."
According to Chahal, their demanding schedules and professional goals led to emotional distance. The couple felt they were growing apart, but they chose not to publicize their troubles. He said they kept things private so that they could try to work things out without pressure from the outside world.
Living Normally on Social Media
Even though their relationship was struggling, Chahal and Dhanashree decided not to show their differences publicly. They posted like a regular couple, smiling in pictures and celebrating moments. Chahal explained this decision by saying: "We decided not to show the public what was going on. We thought maybe things might get better. Until we were completely sure that things wouldn't work, we didn't want anyone to know."
When the interviewer asked if he was faking it during those times, Chahal quietly nodded, confirming that they were pretending everything was fine on social media while going through a rough time in real life.
Careers Took Priority Over Marriage
One of the most honest parts of Chahal’s interview was when he accepted that both he and Dhanashree gave more importance to their careers than their relationship. He explained that it wasn’t intentional, but with time, priorities shifted. "I had to give time to my cricket, she had to give time to her work. We both were so busy. I couldn’t give the relationship the attention it needed. And then, it becomes a habit. You think, 'let it be.' Two people can be ambitious and still be together, but you also need to make space for each other."
Chahal added that every individual has dreams they’ve worked hard for, and sometimes it becomes difficult to make space for love and compromise, especially when both people are chasing big goals.
Cheating Allegations Hurt Deeply
Chahal also addressed the painful part of his divorce—the rumours and allegations that followed. Once news of their separation came out, there were online accusations calling him a "cheater." He strongly denied those claims and expressed how hurtful it was to be blamed for something he never did. "When my divorce happened, people accused me of cheating. But I have never cheated in my life. I'm not that kind of person. I am loyal, and I think from my heart for those I love."
He also mentioned that he was raised in a home with two sisters and was always taught to respect women. He felt that many people on the internet made harsh judgments without knowing the truth. These accusations deeply affected his peace of mind.
Mental Health Decline and Suicidal Thoughts
Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of Chahal’s story was when he spoke about his mental health after the divorce. For the first time, the public got a glimpse of the emotional toll the situation took on the cricketer.
Chahal admitted that he had gone through depression, sleepless nights, and even had suicidal thoughts during the difficult time. "I had suicidal thoughts. I was tired of life. I used to cry for two hours every day and sleep only two hours. This continued for 40–45 days. I just couldn’t concentrate on cricket anymore. I wanted a break."
He said he even discussed these thoughts with a close friend, who helped him get through those dark days. He was scared, lost, and emotionally drained. The constant public judgment and personal pain left him feeling hopeless.
Lessons Learnt Through Pain
Though Chahal went through a very tough period, he also shared how this phase taught him a lot about life, relationships, and self-respect. He mentioned that he now understands the value of mental health and the importance of keeping personal life away from public opinion. "People write anything for views. But they don’t understand the damage their words can do. When someone is already broken inside, such comments make it worse."
Chahal emphasized that one should never judge anyone without knowing the full story. Every person is fighting a battle, and no one should be labeled based on social media or rumors.
Support System Helped Him Heal
Chahal said he was thankful for the support of his family and close friends during this phase. They helped him stay grounded and reminded him of his value and strength. He didn't go into the details about how he managed to come out of the dark period, but he hinted that constant emotional support played a big role.
He also mentioned that he eventually started focusing back on cricket, using his time on the field to slowly rebuild his confidence and mental strength.
Yuzvendra Chahal’s open conversation shows that no matter how famous or successful a person is, they also go through pain, heartbreak, and mental health struggles. By sharing his story, he has shown immense courage and honesty. His words may help others who are silently going through similar situations.
Chahal’s message is clear—don’t judge people without knowing their side of the story, and always be kind, because even a small comment can hurt someone deeply. His story is not just about divorce; it’s about facing public shame, personal breakdowns, and still choosing to stand up again.
In a world full of headlines and rumors, Chahal has reminded everyone that behind every name, there is a human being with real emotions.
