Actor Rajpal Yadav faced major legal trouble after he was sent to Tihar Jail over a ₹9 crore cheque bounce and debt case. He was released on interim bail on February 16. On March 18, the Delhi High Court said he will not be sent back to jail immediately because he has made substantial payments to the complainant.
The court also extended his interim relief until April 1. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said Rajpal was appearing in court regularly and was not trying to escape. The judge noted that since he had already made some payments, there was no reason to put him back in jail at this time.
Earlier, Rajpal had to deposit ₹1.5 crore for his interim bail. After the complainant’s lawyers confirmed the payment into the company’s accounts, the court allowed him to remain free.
The problem started in 2010 when Rajpal took a ₹5 crore loan from Delhi-based Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to make his film Ata Pata Laapata (2012). The film failed at the box office, and he could not repay the loan. A court convicted him and his wife under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act in April 2018 after several cheques bounced.
Rajpal was sentenced to six months’ simple imprisonment, which was upheld by a Sessions Court. By October 2025, he deposited ₹75 lakh, but the majority of the debt remained unpaid. Last month, the court had asked him to surrender, saying leniency cannot continue forever, even for a celebrity. His last-minute request for a one-week extension to arrange funds was rejected because he had not fulfilled many earlier promises.
The relief from the Delhi High Court allows Rajpal Yadav to continue paying his dues without going to jail immediately, giving him temporary protection while the case proceeds.
