People in the UAE were surprised when Wizz Air announced that it will stop flying from Abu Dhabi. Wizz Air is a well-known low-cost airline that many people use to travel to Europe and the Middle East at low prices. Now that it is ending its Abu Dhabi flights, many are asking what this means for cheap travel from the UAE.
This article explains why Wizz Air made this decision, how it affects travelers, and what options are still available for people looking for budget flights.
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi began flying in January 2021. It was a joint company between Wizz Air (from Hungary) and ADQ (from Abu Dhabi). The airline wanted to give people cheap and easy ways to travel to cities like Athens, Alexandria, and Yerevan, and many places in Europe and Asia.
In a short time, the airline became popular because it had low prices and new planes. It was especially helpful after COVID-19 when more people started traveling again.
Wizz Air has not said exactly why it stopped flights from Abu Dhabi, but experts think there are a few reasons:
High costs: Airport fees and fuel prices have gone up. It may have become too expensive to keep flying from Abu Dhabi.
More competition: Other airlines like Air Arabia and flydubai offer low prices too. Wizz Air may have found it hard to compete.
Changes in travel: After COVID-19, people’s travel habits changed. Wizz Air may now want to focus on other cities where there is more demand.
Many people who travel on a budget used Wizz Air flights from Abu Dhabi. Now that Wizz Air is stopping, they will have fewer cheap flight options from the capital city.
People living in Abu Dhabi may need to travel to Dubai or Sharjah to catch low-cost flights. This can take more time and might cost extra money.
Also, with one airline leaving, other airlines might increase ticket prices since there is less competition. Still, there are many budget travel choices left in the UAE.
Even though Wizz Air is leaving Abu Dhabi, other budget airlines are still active:
Air Arabia (from Sharjah) – Flies to many places in the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa.
flydubai (from Dubai) – Offers cheap tickets to over 90 destinations.
Jazeera Airways (from Kuwait) – Flies to Dubai and other Gulf cities.
These airlines might offer more flights from Abu Dhabi in the future to replace Wizz Air’s routes.
The UAE is a major travel hub, so this move may push the government to help bring new low-cost airlines to Abu Dhabi. They may lower airport fees or give benefits to airlines that want to start flying from the city.
Wizz Air still flies from other countries, so there’s a chance it may return to Abu Dhabi later if things improve.
Right now, airport and tourism officials may work on making Abu Dhabi International Airport more attractive for low-cost airlines.
If you booked a flight with Wizz Air from Abu Dhabi, don’t worry. The airline should contact you directly. You can get a refund or be moved to another flight if available.
Here’s what you should do:
Check your email or the Wizz Air website for updates.
Look for flights from Dubai or Sharjah if you still need to travel.
If you paid with a credit card or bought travel insurance, check if you can get your money back through them.
