David Warner put on a brilliant display of power hitting to lead the Dubai Capitals into the playoffs of the DP World ILT20 on Sunday. The Capitals secured a strong 26-run victory over the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, confirming their spot as the fourth and final team to reach the tournament's knockout stage.
Warner, playing his first match of the season, made a huge impact with an unbeaten 93 runs. His knock helped the Capitals set a daunting total of 217/4, which was the highest score ever at the stadium in this tournament's history. This victory marked the sixth time in seven matches that the Capitals had beaten the Knight Riders.
Chasing 218, the Knight Riders began their innings cautiously. Andries Gous gave them some hope with a fast-paced knock, hitting six boundaries in his first 11 balls. By the end of the powerplay, the Knight Riders were at 50/0. Gous and his partner, Kyle Mayers, kept the momentum going, reaching 89/0 at the halfway mark.

But then a key bowling change turned the game in favor of the Capitals. Afghan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib fooled Mayers with a slower ball, sending him back to the pavilion for 42 off 29 balls. Gous kept fighting and reached 55 before being joined by Joe Clarke, who hit a huge 91-meter six before having to retire hurt.
The Knight Riders were expecting Andre Russell to help shift the momentum back in their favor, but that plan didn’t work. Gous was out for 78 off 47 balls after mistiming a shot, and Russell only faced one ball before getting out. David Willey also went cheaply, leaving the Knight Riders in trouble at 153/5, needing 65 more runs from just three overs.
Dushmantha Chameera sealed the win for the Capitals with an excellent 17th over, helping them secure a vital victory. This was the first time in seven games at the Dubai stadium that a team batting first had won.
Earlier, the Dubai Capitals had batted first and got off to a solid start with Warner and Shai Hope. Despite a tight spell from Willey, who gave away just 11 runs in three overs, the Capitals reached 43/0 by the end of the powerplay. Warner got a lucky break when he was dropped by Russell in the seventh over. He made the most of that chance, hitting four boundaries in an over off Gudakesh Motie.
Hope played his part with two sixes before being bowled out by Roston Chase, ending the opening partnership at 82 runs. Warner reached his half-century in just 33 balls, which marked his 116th career T20 fifty—a record in T20 cricket. He then stepped up his game, hitting a huge six off Sunil Narine as the Capitals crossed 100 in 12 overs.
Naib added more runs with a quick 47 off 25 balls, punishing some loose deliveries from Jason Holder. Though Narine managed to get Naib out, a late cameo from Dasun Shanaka, who scored 17 off seven balls, helped the Capitals reach 217. Warner remained not out on 93, anchoring the innings with a combination of smart batting and experience.
After the match, Warner reflected on his performance: “It took me back to when I was 21 again. You need to have that positive attitude. Shai made my job easier. We got off to a positive start and put up a competitive total. I tried to hit straight. I am still learning. I love this game. I owe this game a lot. Hopefully, I can do even better next time.”
Knight Riders’ captain Sunil Narine praised his team but admitted that the Capitals were the better side. “It was a decent season. We gave it all we could, but it’s not the result we wanted. In a must-win game, you don’t want to chase 217. We had a decent start and tried to take it deep, but they bowled brilliantly, and that was the key factor,” he said.
The Dubai Capitals now look forward to the playoffs, with Warner’s superb knock leading them to a crucial victory.
