Voices of UAE | Dr. Jawad Ghasempour
In the heart of Sharjah, where tradition blends seamlessly with progress, one name has become inseparable from the very idea of compassionate healthcare: Dr. Jawad Ghasempour. For nearly four decades, his story has been more than that of a physician - it has been the journey of a healer, a confidant, and a pillar for countless families who have entrusted him with their health across generations. To speak his name in the community is to evoke trust, comfort, and the reassurance that one is in the hands of a doctor who sees medicine not just as a science, but as a lifelong service.
What began as a modest vision - the dream of creating a small clinic where patients could feel safe, respected, and cared for - eventually grew into the JMC Medical Center, today one of Sharjah’s most respected healthcare institutions. For thousands of families, JMC is not just a medical facility. It is a sanctuary where compassion meets precision, where honesty forms the foundation of care, and where every patient is treated as a person with a story, not merely as a case to be solved. It is a living testimony to how integrity and dedication, sustained year after year, can transform a simple idea into a trusted institution.
The story of Dr. Ghasempour’s life, however, begins long before the doors of JMC ever opened. Born in 1950 in Iran, he grew up in a community where wealth was not measured by possessions, but by closeness and shared humanity. Neighbors supported one another, families opened their homes without hesitation, and service to others was a natural part of life. In such an environment, kindness was not seen as something extraordinary - it was expected. From an early age, Jawad absorbed these lessons, realizing that compassion was not a rare act but a way of living. These values became the compass that guided him through every stage of his journey.
Among the figures who shaped his childhood, one stood out in particular: the local family physician. Jawad often watched as this doctor rushed to attend to sick neighbors, comforted families in their darkest hours, and carried the community’s trust with unwavering dedication. He saw how people placed not only their health but their hopes in the doctor’s care, and how that trust was honored through skill and humanity. The impression was profound. It was not only the science of medicine that fascinated young Jawad but the impact it carried - how one person, with compassion and knowledge, could change the course of many lives. From then on, medicine for him was never to be just a profession or a means of livelihood; it was a mission, a calling, a lifelong responsibility to heal.
That sense of purpose carried him into Tehran University of Medical Sciences, one of the most prestigious institutions in the region. There, he was tested not only academically but personally. The grueling demands of medical training required long days of study and even longer nights in clinics, where theory met the urgency of real patients in need. He discovered that the real lessons of medicine went beyond anatomy and pathology - they lay in the frightened faces of patients, the gratitude in their eyes after relief, and the silence of their families waiting anxiously for answers. Discipline became second nature, resilience grew with every challenge, and empathy became the invisible tool that distinguished him from others. For him, every diagnosis was more than a puzzle to be solved; it was an opportunity to restore dignity and reassurance to another human being. At Tehran University, he was not only trained as a doctor in science but shaped as a healer in spirit.
In 1986, with his young family by his side, he made the bold decision to leave Iran and move to the United Arab Emirates. At the time, the UAE was on the cusp of a transformation, and its healthcare system was still in its early stages, with limited resources and developing facilities. To many, this was a landscape of uncertainty. To Dr. Ghasempour, it was a land of opportunity - a place where his values and skills could take root. Sharjah welcomed him with warmth, and almost instinctively, he knew it was the right place to build his future. Yet the task of establishing a clinic was far from easy. Equipment was scarce, systems were still forming, and each day brought fresh challenges. What he lacked in resources, however, he compensated for with perseverance, sincerity, and faith in his mission.
He still recalls those early patients with clarity. Many came with simple ailments - a fever, a cough, or a child’s illness - but what they carried with them was far greater: trust. They believed in him before his clinic had a reputation, and that trust became the foundation upon which he built his practice. Day after day, patient by patient, he proved that their faith was justified. Slowly, what began as a modest clinic evolved into a place where families not only found treatment but also a sense of safety and respect. That humble beginning was the seed from which JMC Medical Center grew.
Over the years, JMC became one of Sharjah’s most respected healthcare facilities, but its growth was never easy. Financial challenges required careful sacrifices, and long working hours demanded resilience. The process of winning over an entire community also took time. In a city where many doctors were still finding their footing, credibility could not be claimed; it had to be earned. With honesty, consistency, and compassion, he earned it. Families who came hesitantly at first began returning regularly, and soon they brought not only their children but their parents and grandparents as well. Word of mouth carried further than any advertisement could, and slowly JMC became known as a place where people mattered.
What made Dr. Ghasempour stand out was not only his medical expertise but his approach. He combined the precision of science with the tenderness of humanity. For him, medicine was never about treating symptoms in isolation; it was about treating people as a whole - listening to their fears, restoring their dignity, and reassuring them in moments of uncertainty. His guiding principle was simple: every patient should be treated as if they were family. Among the countless stories that marked his career, one remains etched in his heart: the day a child’s life was saved under his care. The relief of the parents, who held his hands and wept in gratitude, remains a memory he carries with humility. “Moments like that remind me why I chose this path,” he says, “and keep me humbled to this day.”
Beyond treating patients, Dr. Ghasempour always saw his role as extending into mentorship. Young doctors and medical trainees often passed through his clinic, learning not only technical skills but also the values that defined him. His advice was always the same: “Treat patients as family.” He modeled this lesson in countless small acts - by listening patiently, by never dismissing even the smallest complaint, and by offering reassurance in the moments when it mattered most. Many of his mentees went on to become respected physicians themselves, carrying forward the ethos of patientfirst care. For him, their success is among his proudest achievements, proof that his impact extends far beyond those he personally treated.
Behind every step of this journey stood the quiet strength of his family. Their sacrifices and support allowed him to work long hours, to endure sleepless nights, and to build JMC from the ground up. Today, his joy is magnified by seeing his son, Dr. Amirpasha Ghasempour, join him in the same mission. A dentist by profession, Dr. Amirpasha brings new skills and perspectives to the clinic, ensuring that JMC provides not just medical and dental care but the warmth of a family caring for families. Together, father and son embody the balance of tradition and innovation, experience and youth. Patients who once came to Dr. Jawad now bring their children and grandchildren, reassured by the continuity of trust. For many, this is what sets JMC apart - it is not just a healthcare facility but a living legacy of compassion passed down through generations.
Over nearly four decades, the UAE has been far more than a workplace for Dr. Ghasempour; it has been home. The nation’s diversity broadened his perspective, its resilience inspired his perseverance, and its warmth made him part of its social fabric. He has had the rare privilege of treating grandparents, parents, and children from the same families - a continuity of trust that he considers the highest honor of his career. “To be trusted by generations,” he says softly, “is the greatest reward a doctor can receive.”
When asked about his proudest achievement, he does not mention awards or accolades. Instead, he speaks of the community he built through JMC - a place where patients feel safe, respected, and cared for. The journey was not without hardships. There were times when resources were painfully limited and decisions unbearably heavy. But faith, perseverance, and the unwavering support of his family carried him through. Looking back, he sums up his life’s philosophy in three words: Compassion. Integrity. Service. To him, these are not lofty ideals but daily practices - values that guided every decision and shaped every relationship with patients, colleagues, and community.
Today, as he reflects on a life dedicated to medicine, he turns his attention to the next generation. His message to young doctors and healthcare professionals is simple, yet profound: “Never forget that medicine is about people, not just treatments. Serve with humility, keep learning, and always let compassion guide your hands.” For him, medicine has always been about entering a patient’s most vulnerable moments with both skill and humanity, ensuring that while disease may be treated, dignity is always preserved. This is the torch he now passes on, ensuring that the values of compassion, integrity, and service will continue to shape the UAE’s healthcare community for generations to come.
