Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, finds itself once again shrouded in hazardous smog. For an entire week, residents have endured polluted air that irritates their eyes and strains their lungs, disrupting their daily lives. In response to this pressing issue, the government has enacted measures necessitating a reduction in factory output.
According to Vietnam's Ministry of Health, when the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeds 200, industries such as steel, chemicals, and energy must scale back production. This directive followed a reported AQI of 243 on Thursday, ranking Hanoi as the fourth most polluted city globally that day, based on data from AirVisual. Earlier this week, the city was reported to top the pollution charts worldwide.
For years, Hanoi has grappled with air quality challenges, particularly during the winter. As the nation develops into a manufacturing hub and urban migration increases, cleanup efforts become increasingly difficult. Emissions from factories, vehicles, and constructions have significantly added to the pollution levels.
Residents like 30-year-old Pham Thu Giang express frustration, noting how the dense smog obscures visibility and causes eye irritation. She dons a mask whenever she ventures outside, though it offers limited protection against the harmful air. Meanwhile, older residents like 75-year-old Luong Van Toi report feelings of fatigue and weakness attributed to the air quality. These individual experiences underscore how pollution tangibly impacts daily life.
Authorities have identified key pollution sources, including traffic, industrial emissions, construction, and waste burning. In particular, the prevalence of gasoline-powered motorbikes in Hanoi is a concern, as noted by city official Le Thanh Thuy, who confirmed these vehicles contribute significantly to the pollution crisis.
In an effort to combat this growing threat, the city has announced a phased ban on gasoline-powered motorbikes in central districts, set to begin in mid-2026. The ban will subsequently extend to fossil-fuel vehicles. This decisive action reflects the seriousness of Hanoi's pollution dilemma.
The statistics are stark. The AQI measurements indicate that current PM2.5 levels might be nearly 50 times greater than what the World Health Organization deems safe. PM2.5 particles pose severe health risks, penetrating deep into the lungs and entering the bloodstream, potentially leading to chronic conditions such as heart disease and respiratory ailments.
While Vietnam strives to secure a robust economic future and Hanoi emerges as a bustling center for industry, the health of its citizens must not be compromised. The omnipresent smog is a clear signal for immediate action; temporary factory cutbacks are just the beginning—long-term solutions are essential.
Enhancements in public transit, increased reliance on cleaner energy, and stricter waste management regulations must be prioritized. Continuing life under a haze of pollution is untenable for the inhabitants of Hanoi. The future health of millions hinges on today’s decisions by the authorities.
This current environmental crisis serves as a cautionary tale, not only for Vietnam but for urban centers undergoing rapid expansion globally. Clean air should not be an ideal; it is a fundamental right. Action must be taken before smog becomes a permanent fixture in Hanoi's atmosphere.
