Central Vietnam was rocked by a tragic landslide on Sunday evening when a bus carrying 32 people from Da Lat to Nha Trang was hit by a sudden flow of mud and rocks, killing at least six passengers and leaving 19 others injured, local authorities reported on Monday.
The incident occurred on the treacherous Khanh Le Pass, a mountainous route prone to landslides during periods of heavy rainfall. Officials confirmed that two passengers remained trapped inside the bus, which is partially buried under soil and boulders, and rescue teams are working tirelessly to free them.
Authorities reported that the landslide was triggered by heavy rains pounding the central region, highlighting the dangers faced by motorists in Vietnam’s rainy season. A photo released by local sources showed the road completely blocked by a thick layer of soil and massive rocks, hampering rescue operations.
“This stretch of road is extremely dangerous during heavy rains,” a local official said. “We are mobilizing all available forces, including police, firefighters, and volunteers, to rescue those trapped and assist the injured.”
In a related incident, three people remain missing in Danang after a separate landslide struck the area on Friday, raising concerns about the escalating impact of Vietnam’s ongoing heavy rainfall and flooding.
The Vietnamese government has urged citizens to exercise extreme caution while traveling in landslide-prone areas and has deployed emergency response teams to monitor critical routes and provide timely assistance.
This tragic bus accident underscores the growing risks of landslides in central Vietnam during the monsoon season, and authorities are calling for increased vigilance, road safety measures, and disaster preparedness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
