The United States and Saudi Arabia have taken a dramatic step forward in their strategic partnership, signing major agreements on civil nuclear energy and advanced defence cooperation during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s high-profile visit to Washington on Tuesday. The White House announced the developments, calling them a “decades-long investment in shared security and stability.”
The centrepiece of the talks was a joint declaration on civil nuclear energy, paving the way for a multi-billion-dollar collaboration aimed at developing Saudi Arabia’s long-term nuclear capabilities. According to the White House, the agreement establishes a strong legal and regulatory framework built on strict non-proliferation standards, ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
Alongside the energy pact, President Donald Trump approved a major defence sale package, which includes the future delivery of the highly coveted F-35 advanced fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. The F-35, one of the world’s most sophisticated stealth aircraft, symbolizes deepening military cooperation at a time of shifting geopolitical alliances in the Middle East.
This marks a significant shift, as the US historically limited the sale of its most advanced defence systems in the region. The move signals Washington’s growing confidence in Riyadh as a long-term security partner.
During the White House meeting, Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman highlighted the importance of strengthening ties across defence, energy, and emerging technologies. The visit also underscored expanding collaboration in the fields of AI, cybersecurity, and regional stability.
The new agreements are expected to reshape power dynamics in the Gulf, bolster Saudi Arabia’s defence modernization plans, and reinforce America’s influence amid increasing competition from global powers.
As the Middle East navigates new conflicts, energy shifts, and diplomatic realignments, the US-Saudi partnership—now backed by nuclear cooperation and advanced air power—stands out as one of the most consequential strategic developments of the year.
