Superstar footballer Cristiano Ronaldo made headlines once again on Tuesday night, attending a White House black-tie dinner alongside Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The high-profile gathering also included influential figures such as tech billionaire Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook, underscoring the intersection of sports, politics, and business.
Speaking ahead of the event, US President Donald Trump called it an “honour” to host Ronaldo, praising the Portuguese star’s role in the Saudi Pro League and his contribution to Saudi Arabia’s ambitious modernization and diversification plans. The Crown Prince has been actively pushing initiatives to reduce the kingdom’s dependence on oil, investing heavily in sports, tourism, and cultural events to reshape Saudi Arabia’s global image.
Ronaldo, who joined Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr football club in early 2023, has reportedly earned over $200 million annually, making him one of the highest-paid athletes in history. Earlier this year, he signed a new two-year deal reportedly worth $400 million, becoming football’s first billionaire player with a net worth of $1.4 billion. His move to Saudi Arabia and close association with the Crown Prince have fueled international scrutiny over so-called “sportswashing,” where high-profile sports figures are leveraged to improve a nation’s image amid human rights concerns and environmental controversies.
Trump, in his address at the dinner, highlighted the close ties between the US and Saudi Arabia, labeling the kingdom a “major non-NATO ally.” He also praised Ronaldo personally, mentioning that his son is a fan of the footballer. Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s presence at the White House marks one of his first visits to the US since 2016, amid a career that has seen extraordinary achievements on the field.
Ronaldo has faced past allegations of sexual assault in the United States, which he has consistently denied. US prosecutors declined to press charges in 2019, citing insufficient evidence. Despite the controversy, he has become a global icon, and his partnership with Saudi Arabia highlights both his career milestones and the kingdom’s strategic investment in high-profile international figures.
Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at Chatham House, noted, “Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in high-profile events and individuals to put the kingdom on the map in terms of sports and tourism in its quest for modernism.” Ronaldo himself has praised the Crown Prince in interviews, referring to bin Salman as “our boss” and promoting the kingdom’s ambitions for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The White House dinner, attended by some of the world’s most influential sports and business personalities, illustrates the growing role of sports diplomacy and the complex interplay between celebrity influence, international relations, and global perceptions of national image. Ronaldo’s involvement underscores how athletes today are not just players on the field but key figures in global branding strategies that resonate far beyond stadiums.
This gathering in Washington, D.C., also reignites discussions about the ethical implications of sportswashing, human rights concerns, and the global power of celebrity influence in shaping political and cultural narratives.
