Qatar continued its strong performance at the Islamic Solidarity Games taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as its athletes won two new bronze medals in fencing and wrestling. The Games, which run until 21st November, bring together more than 3,000 athletes from 57 countries across a wide range of sports. The event highlights sporting talent from across the Islamic world and promotes unity through sports.
Khalid Al Yafei earned Qatar’s first bronze medal of the day in the men’s foil fencing competition. He showed great skill, confidence, and determination throughout the contest, facing strong competitors from various countries. His medal reflects Qatar’s continued growth in fencing and the country’s efforts to strengthen its presence in individual sports.
The second bronze medal came from wrestler Shaheen Mohammad, who competed in the 77kg weight category. He battled through tough matches, showing strong technique and stamina. His bronze medal is an important achievement for Qatar’s wrestling team, as the nation continues to build a competitive group of athletes in regional and international events.
With these two new medals, Qatar’s total medal count at the Games has reached seven. This includes three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. The overall performance shows that Qatar is competing at a high level across different sports.
In handball, the Qatari national team kept its perfect record by defeating the Maldives with an impressive score of 44-6. This huge win allowed Qatar to finish the first round at the top of Group A, winning all its matches with ease. Earlier, the team also defeated Iran 39-23 and the UAE 41-24.
Now, Qatar moves into the semifinals, where it will face Bahrain, the runner-up of Group B. The second semifinal match will feature Saudi Arabia, the top team in Group B, against the UAE, the second-place team in Group A. Qatar aims to defend the gold medal it won in the previous edition of the Games held in Konya, Türkiye, in 2022.
Qatar also showed success in camel racing, an important traditional sport in the region. Athlete Hazem Abdullah Al Nudailah qualified for the men’s 2000-meter final after finishing second in his heat at the Al-Janadriyah Racecourse. His qualification gives Qatar another opportunity to compete for a medal. The final race will take place on Wednesday.
In athletics, Qatari runner Abubaker Haidar qualified for the 800-meter final after winning his heat with an impressive time of 1:50.09. He will now compete for a medal in the final round and hopes to add another award to Qatar’s total.
Shot put athlete Ahmed Jibril also represented Qatar well, finishing fourth in the men’s shot put competition with a throw of 18.51 meters. Although he narrowly missed a medal, his performance was strong and competitive against top athletes from other countries.
Qatar’s athletes have shown great performance, strong teamwork, and high spirit at the Islamic Solidarity Games. With more events coming up, the nation hopes to add more medals to its growing collection. The achievements so far reflect Qatar’s ongoing investment in sports and its commitment to supporting athletes across many disciplines.
