US Pushes Google to Split Chrome Amid AI Search Fears

The US government is asking a judge to make Google give up its Chrome browser. They believe Google is becoming too powerful, and this power could grow even more with new internet tools in the future.

On Monday, lawyers from the Department of Justice spoke in front of Judge Amit Mehta. Last year, this judge decided that Google had broken the law by being too strong in online search. Now he is thinking about how to fix the problem.

A government lawyer named Gail Slater said that the future of the internet is at risk. She said if Google is not stopped now, it could control a big part of the internet for many years, not only in search but in other new internet areas too.

Google is spending a lot of money on new internet tools and adding them to its search and other services. But Google said the government is going too far. Google thinks it is not fair to ask them to give up Chrome, or maybe even Android, which is used in many mobile phones.

Kent Walker, a top Google leader, said the case is really about the deals Google has with companies like Apple and Samsung. These deals help Google show its search engine to more people. He wrote online that the government is asking for something too extreme, and this would hurt people in America and also stop Google from leading in technology around the world. He said the government’s request is much bigger than what the court had ruled earlier.

This legal fight started in 2020. In August 2024, the judge said Google broke the rules. Now the court is trying to find a good solution.

At the same time, Google is also facing another problem. A different judge recently said Google had too much power in the online ad market. This could affect how Google earns its money.

The US government and many states said that Google acted unfairly to stay strong in online ads. They said Google controls three big parts of online ads: tools for websites, tools for advertisers, and the places where ads are bought and sold.

Most websites use Google’s ad tools, so it's very hard for them to avoid Google. The judge, Leonie Brinkema, agreed with most of the claims. She said Google used unfair rules to stay number one, and also removed useful features from the tools that might help others.

Google makes most of its money from ads. These ads help pay for free services like Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Search. The money also helps Google build more tools for the internet.

These two court cases could lead to big changes for Google. The company might be broken into smaller parts, and its power might be reduced.
