The US Central Command has confirmed that US forces carried out airstrikes on Iranian missile sites near the Strait of Hormuz using powerful 5,000-pound “deep penetrator” munitions.
According to the US military, these strikes targeted hardened and underground missile facilities located along Iran’s coastline. These sites were believed to house anti-ship cruise missiles that posed a serious threat to international shipping passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The weapons used in the attack, often called bunker-buster bombs, are specially designed to destroy fortified or underground targets. Their use suggests that the US aimed to weaken Iran’s coastal defense system and reduce its ability to launch attacks on ships in the region.
This military action comes at a time when the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most important oil routes—has seen major disruption. Ongoing tensions and conflict in the region have slowed down or halted commercial shipping, affecting global energy supplies and increasing oil prices.
US President Donald Trump has urged other countries to support efforts to secure the waterway. He warned that Iran’s actions, including the use of drones, missiles, and naval mines, have made the route unsafe for oil tankers.
However, several US allies have not committed to sending military support to the region. In response, Trump expressed disappointment and said the US may act alone if needed to ensure safe passage through the strait.
The situation remains tense, and these strikes could be part of a larger effort to restore stability and reopen one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
