US and Canadian Fighters Intercept Russian and Chinese Bombers Near Alaska On Wednesday, American and Canadian warplanes intercepted two Russian TU-95 bombers and two Chinese PRC H-6 bombers in international airspace near Alaska, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The joint US-Canadian defense organization reported that the aircraft were detected, tracked, and intercepted within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
The ADIZ is an area beyond national borders where air traffic is monitored to allow for additional reaction time in the event of potential hostile actions. This zone provides an extra layer of defense by ensuring that any aircraft approaching the borders can be identified and addressed before they enter sovereign airspace.

NORAD confirmed that the intercepted bombers did not breach American or Canadian sovereign airspace and that their activities were not considered a direct threat. The intercepts involved fighter jets from both the United States and Canada. This kind of interception of Russian aircraft is a routine occurrence in the region, as these maneuvers are part of standard protocol for monitoring and responding to foreign military aircraft approaching the ADIZ.
The intercept operation was conducted without incident, and the bombers remained in international airspace throughout the engagement. NORAD’s statement underscored that the presence of these aircraft, while notable, did not pose an immediate threat to national security.
