His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UOS), recently shared his pride in the university’s steady growth and its stronger position among top universities worldwide. He said that the university is becoming more well-known for its work in many fields like academics and science, both in the UAE and around the world.
This news comes as the University of Sharjah became the first university in the Middle East to earn the highest Platinum Rating under the STARS program. STARS, run by an organization called AASHE, measures how well universities work on sustainability. The University of Sharjah scored 100% in the category of sustainable education and research. This shows how committed the university is to protecting the environment in its daily work and plans. It also shows the university’s important role in teaching students about sustainable ways to live and work. This achievement fits well with the UAE and Sharjah’s plans to focus on sustainability and reducing carbon emissions through education, research, and smart planning.

With this award, the University of Sharjah joined a small, special group of just 15 universities worldwide with the Platinum rating. Most are from the United States and Canada, and UOS is the only one from the Middle East.
His Highness congratulated everyone involved with the university, including the Board of Trustees, university leaders, staff, and students. He said that this success came from clear goals, strong vision, and the hard work of the entire UOS community. He also highlighted that students are always the main focus of the university’s work.
He added that the university is always trying to give students the best experience. This includes improving the courses, research chances, student activities, support for new ideas, and hiring great teachers and staff. All of this is done with a focus on sustainability in education, which is becoming more important around the world. Because of this, the University of Sharjah is improving its ranking in many academic and scientific areas globally.
The university earned this Platinum award after being evaluated by the STARS program. STARS is known for being open and clear in how it measures sustainability at universities worldwide. It helps schools set long-term goals for sustainability, encourages them to keep improving, and helps build strong, diverse university communities focused on excellent education.
The University of Sharjah joined the STARS program in 2021. That year, it earned a Silver rating. In 2022, it became the first university in the Arab world to get a Gold rating. Now, it has reached the highest rating possible — Platinum. This shows that the University of Sharjah is a leader in sustainability and is committed to making a positive difference for the future.
