A new law in the United Kingdom is garnering attention amidst the escalating global cybersecurity threats, with experts hailing it as a step in the right direction. The UK has become the first country globally to prohibit generic passwords on new smart devices, aiming to enhance security measures.
Carmi Levy, a respected technology analyst, journalist, and author, emphasized the significance of the legislation. Under the new law, manufacturers are mandated to refrain from assigning easily guessable passwords like "admin" or "12345" to smart devices upon purchase. Instead, they must implement stronger passwords and prompt users to change them immediately. This proactive approach aims to tackle the prevalent issue of default passwords being left unchanged, leaving devices vulnerable to exploitation.

While praising the UK's initiative, Levy highlighted potential limitations of the law. Notably, it appears to focus solely on smart devices and excludes apps or online services. Additionally, there's a risk that users may become complacent due to a false sense of security provided by the legislation, making them more susceptible to cyber attacks.
Levy urged individuals to take personal responsibility for their online security, emphasizing the importance of not solely relying on government regulations. He suggested incorporating additional security measures, such as utilizing password management tools like Dashlane or 1Password, or opting for physical methods like locking passwords in a secure location.
Furthermore, Levy advised implementing multiple layers of security, such as facial, fingerprint, or voice recognition, to bolster protection against unauthorized access.
Overall, while the UK's new law represents a significant milestone in cybersecurity regulation, Levy emphasized the need for collective vigilance and proactive measures from individuals to safeguard against evolving cyber threats.
