UAE to Launch Facial Recognition ID System No Card Needed

Post by: Omar Nasser

The United Arab Emirates is preparing to bring in a new smart ID system that will use face recognition instead of plastic Emirates ID cards. This means people may soon not need to carry physical ID cards anymore.

The new system is being developed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security. According to the Authority, they have already tested the technology and it may be launched all over the country within the next year.

This update came as a reply to a question raised in the Federal National Council (FNC), where a member asked about using more digital ID tools to make services faster and better for the public.

The new ID system will be available through the Authority’s mobile app. It will be rolled out step by step, starting with the most used services first.

The goal of this smart system is to make checking ID safer, faster, and simpler. People won’t need to carry a card or remember numbers—just their face will do.

This step is part of the UAE's larger goal to go more digital. It wants to give people smoother and easier services in areas like government offices, banks, phone companies, hospitals, hotels, and more.
