The UAE cricket team kicks off their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia and East Asia Pacific Qualifier today, facing Qatar in a high-stakes opening match. With ambitions set on the 2026 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, every game counts for the UAE as they aim to secure their spot on the global stage.
Nine teams are competing in the qualifiers, divided into three groups. The top two teams from each group will move to the Super Six stage, a round-robin competition among the best six sides. From there, the top three will earn their place in the T20 World Cup alongside pre-qualified cricketing giants like India, Australia, Pakistan, and New Zealand.
Group A features the UAE, Malaysia, and Qatar, while Group B has Japan, Kuwait, and Nepal. Group C includes Oman, Papua New Guinea, and Samoa. All matches are being played at the Oman Cricket Academy in Al Amerat, near Muscat. This year’s tournament is unique as it brings together teams from Asia and the East Asia Pacific region, offering fresh challenges for the UAE, which previously only faced Asian opponents.

The UAE enter the tournament as the highest-ranked team in the region, carrying strong hopes of advancing. Recent performances have been encouraging, including a notable win against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup and competitive series in Uganda. Head coach Rajput emphasized that the team is steadily building confidence and looking to maintain an upward trajectory in the qualifiers.
Among the challengers, Nepal stands out, arriving in impressive form after their historic series win over the West Indies in Sharjah — the first time they defeated a Test-playing nation. The UAE squad features a mix of experienced players and emerging talent, including captain Muhammad Waseem, Alishan Sharafu, Aryansh Sharma, Basil Hameed, and Junaid Siddique, ready to take on the competition.
As the qualifiers unfold, fans and cricket enthusiasts will be watching closely to see if the UAE can turn their regional dominance into a ticket for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
