The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has once again reiterated its strong commitment to reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), emphasizing the urgent need to address the outdated geopolitical realities that are currently reflected in the Council’s composition. The UAE made this call during a debate at the United Nations, where it aligned itself with Bahrain’s statement, delivered on behalf of the Arab Group.

The UAE’s representative highlighted that the current structure of the UNSC does not reflect the modern realities of international politics. The country called for a more inclusive representation that mirrors the diversity of the global community, particularly the Global South. The UAE emphasized the underrepresentation of regions such as Africa, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, and the Arab World—regions that are directly affected by the UNSC’s decisions. This issue has long been a concern, as decisions made by the Council often fail to adequately reflect the interests and needs of these areas.
In a show of solidarity, the UAE congratulated Ambassador Mohamed Al-Banai and Ambassador Jan Marschik for their reappointment as Co-Chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN). The UAE commended their leadership in driving transparency and institutional memory within the ongoing reform discussions.
The UAE also welcomed the progress made through the "Pact for the Future," a framework that aims to lay the groundwork for the upcoming rounds of negotiations on UNSC reform. The country reaffirmed its support for this initiative, believing that it sets a positive trajectory for future reform discussions.
Further, the UAE echoed the Arab Group's call for greater Arab representation within the UNSC and recognized the aspirations of African nations to secure a more prominent role, as outlined in both the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration. These efforts reflect a broader push for a more equitable distribution of power within the Council.
Additionally, the UAE raised concerns about the misuse of the veto power by some of the permanent members, which has, in their view, led to deadlock and hindered the Council’s ability to respond effectively to global crises. The UAE stressed the need to introduce measures that would limit the use of the veto and urged continued exploration of ways to make its use more responsible.
In closing, the UAE reaffirmed its commitment to an open and constructive dialogue on reforming the Security Council. The country stressed that a more representative and effective Council is vital for the credibility of the UN and the promotion of international peace and security. The UAE called for good faith negotiations, urging all stakeholders to seek common ground and compromise in order to restore trust and improve the functioning of the UNSC for future generations.
