Staff at UAE Field Hospital in Gaza Donate Blood to Support War-Torn Civilians
Staff at the UAE's field hospital in Gaza have taken a remarkable step by donating their own blood to aid Palestinians affected by the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, as reported by The National. Since its opening in December, the 200-bed facility in Rafah has treated over 48,000 injured individuals, reflecting the intense demand for medical care amidst the crisis.

Dr. Sultan Al Kaabi, the hospital's director, shared that the medical team has organized five blood donation campaigns to support local hospitals throughout the enclave. He emphasized the unity and solidarity demonstrated by Emirati blood mixing with Palestinian blood, symbolizing their commitment to alleviating the dire health situation in the region.
The hospital, part of the UAE's Gallant Knight 3 operation, continues to offer crucial medical support. Dr. Al Kaabi noted that the facility has handled 48,704 patients and performed 1,773 surgeries. "Our goal is to provide immediate relief and save lives during this critical period," he explained.
The field hospital, established following a directive from President Sheikh Mohamed, is equipped with advanced medical technology and resources. It provides a range of services, including general and orthopaedic surgery, anaesthesia, intensive care, internal medicine, and mental health treatment. It also features a pharmacy, laboratory, blood bank, and a new department for neurosurgery and physiotherapy.
One of the notable technological advances at the hospital is its use of SpaceX's Starlink internet service, which enables live video consultations and collaboration with international specialists, crucial for providing specialized care in a region where communications are often disrupted.
Dr. Al Kaabi recounted a poignant story of a young man who had lost both lower limbs in a strike. After life-saving surgery and amputations, the patient expressed his gratitude, saying he was now happy to help his family, which deeply touched Dr. Al Kaabi.
Despite the challenging conditions, including the destruction of much of Gaza's infrastructure, the field hospital continues to offer vital support. Dr. Al Kaabi, supported by his family and encouraged by his mother, remains dedicated to his mission in Gaza, proud of the impact his team is making.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 39,000 Palestinian deaths and approximately 90,000 injuries since its escalation on October 7, following Hamas's attack on southern Israel. The war has displaced about 80% of Gaza's 2.3 million residents and caused widespread devastation to homes, hospitals, and schools.
