US President Donald Trump has officially signed a new law ordering the release of government files related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The legislation requires the Justice Department to make all documents from its Epstein investigation public within 30 days, though some material could be withheld if it involves ongoing investigations or sensitive personal information.
Trump’s approval came after both chambers of Congress passed the bill overwhelmingly, with the House of Representatives voting 427-1 and the Senate giving unanimous consent. Initially, Trump had opposed the release, dismissing calls to make the files public as a Democratic “hoax,” but he reversed his position last week following criticism from Epstein’s victims and members of his own party.
The files include records from criminal investigations into Epstein, such as transcripts of interviews with victims and witnesses, documents seized during raids on his properties, internal Justice Department communications, flight logs, and information on individuals and entities connected to him. These documents are separate from over 20,000 pages of materials from Epstein’s estate that Congress released last week, some of which directly mention Trump.
Trump had been friends with Epstein for years but has stated that they fell out in the early 2000s, two years before Epstein’s first arrest. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein and has said that the issue is primarily a problem for Democrats, accusing them of being connected to Epstein.
The release of these files has been described as “monumental” by the family of Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s victims who died by suicide earlier this year. Her family emphasized the importance of transparency and ensuring that all individuals involved are held accountable, regardless of their influence, wealth, or political party.
Epstein was found dead in a New York prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking. He had previously been convicted in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor. Epstein had connections with numerous high-profile individuals from politics, media, and royalty, including former President Trump, former Harvard president Larry Summers, Steve Bannon, and Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, brother of King Charles.
The law signed by Trump requires Attorney General Pam Bondi to release all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials concerning Epstein and his co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking. Certain information can be withheld if its disclosure would compromise ongoing investigations or violate personal privacy protections.
Lawmakers, including Congressman Thomas Massie, have expressed concern that parts of the files might still be withheld under the guise of active investigations, potentially limiting the transparency intended by the law.
This move marks a significant step toward public access to the full details of Epstein’s criminal network and his connections to prominent figures, fulfilling longstanding demands from victims and advocates for justice.
