British trade unions have gathered in Brighton for their annual meeting, which runs from Sunday through Wednesday. Hosted by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the conference marks the first TUC congress in 15 years under a Labour government, highlighting its significance.
The TUC is urging the new Labour administration to address longstanding issues in public services and improve working conditions. "We are ready to work with this government after 14 years of chaos," a TUC spokesperson told AFP. The unions are calling for a comprehensive plan to revamp public services, which have struggled to attract and retain staff due to stagnant wages and heavy workloads.
The Labour Party, historically aligned with trade unions, has already promised above-inflation wage increases for frontline services that have faced frequent strikes in recent years, from railways to healthcare. The TUC views these promises as a "crucial first step" but insists that the government must go further to fully compensate civil servants for the decline in their purchasing power over the past decade and a half.

The conference will also feature a speech from a government figure, with speculation circulating around Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The TUC’s agenda includes advocating for the Labour Party’s election manifesto promises, such as banning practices like "fire and rehire" and zero-hours contracts, which the unions argue exploit workers.
TUC Secretary General Paul Nowak emphasized that while the government’s proposals are a positive development, businesses built on low-paid, insecure employment will need to adapt to the new standards. As Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves pledges fiscal discipline, the unions are poised to apply pressure on the Labour government to meet their demands and transform workers' conditions.
