Billy Bob Thornton is once again addressing one of the most infamous stories about his past relationship with Angelina Jolie. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the actor clarified the long-standing rumor that he and Jolie once wore vials of each other’s blood, a story that over the years has become a punchline about their marriage.
Thornton explained that the story had been blown out of proportion. “We each had a little locket, literally with a drop of blood in them,” he said, emphasizing that the gesture was intended to be personal and sweet, not the bizarre tale the media had made it out to be.
“That’s a romantic little idea, and that is all that was. But by the time it’s over, we're vampires. We live in a dungeon, we drink each other's blood, and this kind of stuff,” Thornton added with a touch of humor.
He also spoke about the intensity of their relationship, acknowledging the strong connection he shared with Jolie. “And of course, Angelina and I had a great time together. That was one of the greatest times of my life,” he told Rolling Stone, stressing that the public’s perception made the relationship appear stranger than it really was.
Despite their separation, Thornton confirmed that their split was amicable. “We’re still very, very close friends. And that was the one that ended up being a really civilised breakup,” he explained. The differences in their lifestyles were cited as the main reason for the end of their marriage, not any personal conflict.
Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie first met in 1999 while filming Pushing Tin. The couple eloped to Las Vegas in 2000 and later announced plans to adopt Maddox in 2002. Their marriage ended in 2003.
Even years after the divorce, the blood-vial story persisted. Thornton had previously addressed it in 2014 during a talk at Loyola Marymount University, recounting how Jolie had purchased a small locket kit and suggested they each put a drop of blood inside. “Nothing more dramatic than that,” he clarified at the time.
The actor’s recent interview aims to put the rumors to rest once and for all, emphasizing that the gesture was simply a personal and romantic symbol, far removed from the vampire-inspired mythology the media created.
