Students, environmental activists, and many others have been protesting against the Telangana government’s plan to cut down trees in the Kancha Gachibowli forest, which is located next to the University of Hyderabad (UoH). The government wanted to build IT parks in this area, but due to strong opposition, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy seems to have changed his mind.

What’s the New Plan?
The government now wants to drop the IT park project and instead create a big eco-park that will cover the entire 2,000-acre area. This new eco-park will be a place for people to enjoy nature, and it will have some exciting features, such as:
The World’s Tallest Watchtower: People will be able to climb it and get a beautiful view of the surroundings.
Observatories: Tall towers where visitors can look at the sky and nature.
Walking Trails: Paths where people can walk, jog, or just enjoy nature.
Wildlife Zones and Butterfly Gardens: Areas where animals and colorful butterflies live freely.
Open-Air Gyms: Places where people can exercise outdoors.
The eco-park will also focus on protecting the environment. The government plans to create a special “micro-ecosystem” that will help keep the area clean, study the soil, and grow many different types of trees.
What About the University of Hyderabad?
Since the land near the university is being turned into an eco-park, the government plans to move the University of Hyderabad to a new place on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The university will be given 100 acres of land to build its new campus, and the government will invest ₹1,000 crore (around 120 million USD) to develop it.
Students Are Not Happy About This Move
Many students are angry and upset about the idea of relocating their university. They believe this is just a trick by the government to divert attention from the real issue, which is the destruction of 400 acres of forest land.
A student leader, who had previously protested against cutting down trees, said, “The land belongs to the university, and it’s not fair to give us only 100 acres when we originally had much more. This deal is not right.”
What’s Next?
The government has not officially announced if the plan will move forward. Some officials say the new eco-park will be great for the city as it will create more green space. However, students and environmentalists believe the government is trying to mislead the public with this new plan.
