A serious incident unfolded at the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus on Tuesday morning, leading to the arrest of a 14-year-old boy. This incident, which resulted in the stabbing of a 22-year-old man, prompted a swift police response and a lockdown of university buildings.
Emergency crews were called to the scene, where they treated the victim before transporting him to a hospital. New South Wales state police reported that the injured man is in serious but stable condition.
Following the stabbing, the alleged attacker attempted to flee the scene by boarding a bus but was apprehended near a hospital shortly after. Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat, emphasizing that the attacker and the victim were strangers.

The University of Sydney confirmed the police presence on their Camperdown campus, stating that officers would remain on site as investigations continue. Police have secured the crime scene to conduct their inquiries.
This incident follows a series of violent attacks in Sydney. Just two months ago, a knife attack at a beachside mall in Bondi resulted in six deaths and 12 injuries. Additionally, an Assyrian church bishop was wounded in an unrelated stabbing during a service in western Sydney. The mall attacker was shot dead by police, while a 16-year-old was charged with a terrorism offense for the church stabbing.
In response to these violent incidents, the New South Wales state government has taken steps to strengthen knife control laws. New legislation passed in June allows police to use electronic metal-detecting scanners without a warrant in places like shopping centers, sporting venues, and public transport stations. The new laws also increase penalties for selling knives to minors. Sellers can now face fines up to A$11,000 ($7,314), imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both. Additionally, selling a knife to individuals aged 16 or 17 without a reasonable excuse is now prohibited.
The University of Sydney and local authorities are working together to ensure the safety of the campus community while the investigation into this latest incident continues.
