11 Soldiers Killed in Attack During Mission in Ecuador Amazon

Post by : Layla Badr

Eleven soldiers were killed and one more was badly hurt in Ecuador’s Amazon region during a violent attack by a criminal group, the country’s defense ministry said on Friday.

The soldiers were taking part in a special mission to stop illegal gold mining in an area called Alto Punino, which is deep in the Amazon rainforest. This area has become dangerous because of illegal mining and criminal activities.

According to a report, the army was suddenly attacked by a group known as Comandos de la Frontera, which means "Border Command" in English. The group used deadly weapons like rifles, grenades, and explosives to attack the soldiers.

The government believes this group is involved in illegal activities and operates near the border. The defense ministry said the attack was an ambush — a surprise attack — that happened while the soldiers were trying to bring peace and order to the region.

Officials are now investigating the attack and planning next steps to stop the group responsible. The Ecuadorian army and government have promised to continue their efforts to fight against crime and illegal mining, and to make the region safer.
